My first Paph.

So I went to the Denver Orchid Society Fall Orchid Show today!!!!
The show went on despite our freezing temperatures.
I was like a kid in a candy store. Oh boy!
I couldn't buy a lot-just no more space in the house, but I wanted to get my first Paph. I could not decide between one beautiful purple one and a green one until I saw this one-it's green and purple at the same time (probably a mix of those two I was looking at)! So I got it.
His name is Phal. Hilo Lagoon '#1' x Paph. {(Clarissa x Mod Maude) x Robert De Veer}. What a mix!
I like the shades of purple. I like him. Don't you?

He is cute! I love the purple and green together!

I found a Paph at a Dominick's the other day and had to bring him home!

It's beautiful! Only wish my paph was ready to spike haha. For a long time I was nervous about getting any paphs and thought I would have a difficult time growing them even though I had a big mix of other plants. But I found they were actually easier to grow for me than phals I had purchased mine while not in bloom as a tiny plant and by the time winter came around I actually bloomed it

Yep, that's how I feel right now. I hope it likes it here in my house.
I could not believe my eyes how many different paphs were there at the show. The ones I like a lot are "cochlopetalums", they look almost like oncidiums , that's how many blooms they have at the same time. And, oh boy, how beautiful the red/orangy ones are!!!! Unfortunatly most of them were the award winners, so I could not afford them....., yet.
Maybe when I know how to deal with them.....

I just have two as I never seem to have extra money to spend when vendors do talks at our society meetings haha. I have a Paph delenatii (white with pink pouch) & a seedling Paph insigne var. sanderae (seems to grow so slow have had it for a year and only has had one new leaf grow). I bet you will find them very easy to grow, they take the same light as phals like to stay a little more moist than phals, the roots are dark colored and hairy looking and there is usually only a few roots per growth.

He is the one I have seen pics of several times and I just love them. Green is my fav color and purple is my boyfriend's lol. I would be a little scared with my first paph too(partly cuz I only have phals and partly cuz my bf would kill me for buying one :P). Congrats on the wonderful new buy he is pretty. Does he have the different colored leaves like some? Those leaves are what make me really wanna get a paph (since the leaves are around more :P)

It is pretty. Good luck with it. I have not bought any paphs since I got back into orchids. I have two plants bought in flower two years ago. They have hung in there but not rebloomed. Now, they are suddenly unhappy. One is about to go kaput.

Can you define "unhappy"? Is it wilting? How are the roots? What conditions are you growing it under (temps, light, watering, etc)?

Interesting, as Kevin also asked.
What went wrong as they are fairly easy to grow if a few rules are followed.

Oh no!!!!!!
Maybe because both of you guys are from Florida??????
The guy who sold me this paph was assuring me that it can't get any easier than with this one........ I have read also that paphs should be easy to deal with. I guess I'll have to wait and see. I just put him in the last row of my south facing (tinted) window, and I'll be watching him. I don't want him to misbehave

Yes, I know what you are talking about, I love his leaves too.
He is actually bigger than appears in the picture. His bloom is 6 inches wide and he is in the big 6" pot.

Wow. That is really big. I love mottled leaves.

Kevin and Bernie; thanks for your concern. I know these are low light and higher water, like Phals. Water may be one issue. It has been hot and dry. But there seems to be a funk. They brown up at the base, then take the whole plant section. I'm down to one section on the one. The other looks to be starting the same thing. I repotted the failing one about two months ago. Roots OK I guess. They are very different roots than say, Phals. May just be a water issue with the heat. don't know.

(sorry, don't mean to divert thread)

Clearly we have excellent taste

I was like that all weekend. (except on sunday It was...don't buy a lot, you spent too much yesterday at the reptile show!)

and I love that Paph. I'll have to check the tags when I get home (I spend an lot of time in coffee shops), but I'm pretty sure I bought that exact same one on Sunday at the IL Orchid Show. If I didn't buy that exact same species cross, I bought one almost exactly like it in looks. Mine just finished fully opening.
