Dendrobium Question

I have four Dendrobiums.

Yellow Song Canary and Himezakura Sonoku have lost all foliage just stubs standing. Yellow song has a bit of green showing at the base.

Oriental Smiles and Pixie Princess anre just as green and prolific as can be.

Now my questions are all of these Nobiles

If so, why are two in full greenery and two barren

I hope this doesn't sound too dumb
Terry

I'll be watching for your answers. I have 1 den nobile, which I bought almost a year ago while it was in full bud. It has grown like crazy since blooming, but as yet hasn't lost any of it's leaves. right now it has 1 bud on one of the original 3 canes. Nothing happening on the 7 new canes, all have their leaves, so I don't know if it's too soon for these canes to get blooms.

from the naming Yellow Song Canary and Himezakura Sonoku both these are nobile. SO dont worry about losing leave. U going to get flowers! That the way they are ..
The other two dendrobium are warm growing type , hence they don't lose the leaves.
so calm down you are o.k.

Not all dendrobiums lose their leaves every season. Some skip a season. You can tell whether or not they're nobiles by where the buds come from. Up and down the cane, it's a nobile. From a spike at the tip of the cane, its warm growing, like digitalgate says. For the nobiles stop all fertilizer and start tapering off the water. They need to rest. The warm growers continue to grow all year (perhaps more slowly) and don't take a dry rest.

not all nobile dendrobium need to be treated in this manner. Yellow song canary can bloom with any withholding of water. Of course , the bloom would be much spectacular with that! I have nobile hybrid that has been hybridized so much so that it do not need withholding of water and fertilizer to bloom.

Thanks for this thread! I've read all these things before, but now that I have a nobile type, it all left my head! I read somewhere that the with holding should be between Halloween (10/31) and Valentines day (2/14) does this sound right, or am I dreaming of this info?

I agree with patticake. I have several dens and they all bloom from the top. The one I have in bloom is the very first den I ever bought about 3 yrs ago. I will post pics later. It's not the phal type den. When I bought it I was totally cluess about orchids and it's survived. It is a dark purple w/the cork screw type petals and small lip. Right now all my dens are putting out new growth
since I've repotted. I have noticed that with this den if I put it outside and let it alone (managed neglect) it will bloom. Leave it inside year round and it won't do a thing. Right now all I do is water once a week and are sitting in humidity trays. No fertilizer. Here's what I have: I need more guidence on the fertilizing.

Schultz 10-15-10 (regular houseplant fertilizer)

Yamamoto, who hybridizes nobile dens, recommends twenty-five cool nights for them to bloom better. As digitalgate says, some of his nobiles do not need the dry cooling down that other nobiles do. I usually gave them the few weeks from Thanksgiving to Christmas on the drier side and they bloomed well for me.
