staking opinion on spikes

I just wanted to get some imput on staking spikes. Has anyone tried to secure the stake to the outside of the pot with a rubber band or something similar instead of putting the stake in the growing medium? Also when is good time to do stake the spike?

Depending upon the type of plant many do not need to be staked even though you commonly see them staked. Part of this is because it provides some measure of protection during transporting/shipping. I tend to wait until the spike is good and strong/sturdy before thinking about staking and then don't clip too close to the growing tender end portion or even tender side spikes. If I'm not taking them anywhere - just enjoying them at home - I try to leave many of them unstaked. Of course some phals and others can grow very long spikes and the stakes certainly will provide protection from damage and allow growers to increase the aesthetics to the overall plant. Do you have a concern about damaging roots or something when inserting a stake into the media? There are many types of stakes available - wires, bamboo, plastic, misc. types and shapes of wood, etc.

That was exactly what I meant putting the stake in the medium and damaging the roots. I have three phals in spike now. One mini phal and two small phals which I believe is their first bloom. The plants aren't very large and in 3" pots with bark. It looks to me that it would next to impossible to get a stake into the pot to support the spike. Maybe I'll just let them bloom without support and only if needed try something later.

Most of the stakes I have are pointed (or small diameter stiff wire) and you can very gently coax them down without any significant damage. If they encounter a root you just redirect the angle somewhat and eventually you find the bottom. As you have indicated, with young phals you probably won't even need them anyway. Enjoy! mike

I have stakes on only one orchid a Beallara which I discovered has such heavy flowers it will bend the spike. The stake is more for support of this spike. It's the first time I have seen a need for a spike. My phals just dangle and I think it's more 'natural' for them.

I have seem people use tie wraps to support a pole on the outside of the pot. The spike is then attached as needed. If the spike exceeds the stake, just use a heavy gauge wire to support it a bit by creating a tunnel around the spike which the spike lays on.

Thanks to all. I think I'm just going to let them go and see what happens. If they need support then I'll cross that path later. I do have brazing wire that is very stiff if needed.
