I Got A Back Bulb To Grow!

this was just so cool to me, im a bit new to all this and when i was doing my first repotting a few months ago, one of my Miltonias had two little back bulbs fall off as i was trimming the roots. it was so small and sad and i had hardly read anything about what to do with it. and i had no spag to bag it with.

so i potted it up really softly in a fine mix all fluffed up and then inverted a glass in the pot covering the bulb making a little terrarium.

well that was the end of may, and i kept it moist, but lately had kinda start giving up on it and probably hadn't watered it in weeks,

well i was cleaning today and saw it on the bottom shelve and thought it was time to toss it and make room......

low and behold!

Congrats on that! I will have to remember about putting the inverted glass over the backbulb, that seems like a good idea.

Way to go. A new orchid on it's way. Someone else got some back bulbs to grow by putting them in a plastic bag and setting them aside and had forgotten about them. I think it may have been Mayers. Nice surprise.

the thing i liked about the glass was it gave it light still, and gave me a good indicator of how humid the air in there was, when it stopped fogging up in the afternoon warm up, i know it was time to give it more water.
of course in the end it was bone dry and still growing, really amazing

why i liked it more than a bag was that i knew nothing was touching the bulb ot future plant that maybe could lead to rot or damage

Good going, I never throw anything away until it turns brown because it amazes me how much these plants put into continuing to live. Good luck.

That is pretty cool! I might have to try that if something goes wrong with any of my Onc. plants.

UPDATE:

just an update, i had taken the little "back bulb that could" and placed it low in a deli container of s/h and even placed a lid on it. the kind of dome lid you see on drinks with whip cream. it is a perfect lid for this it keeps humidity high and still gives a little air flow.
the evap of the s/h is now feeding it a steady flow of humid air
i was just away for 2 weeks and came home to its little leaves having doubled in size, some day this will be a whole new plant!!!

i like this version better than the normal "Spag & Bag" since nothing is touching the leaves or bulb to keep those areas too wet or encourage rot.
