It looks a lot like my psycopsis (sp?). I know butterfly orchids are sometimes classified as oncidiums. They have flowers that really do look just like butterflies, complete with antenna - at least in the photos. Mine was "mature size" when I bought it, it's expected to bloom within a year but hasn't yet.

Luci - In doing a little research it looks to me like the names you have listed match plants being sold on ebay at this link and others - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200044501493. One would expect to see an oncidium looking plant instead of the phal-type looking plant in your photo. With my limited experience I would doubt the plant you have listed is the plant with the name you list. Take this for what its worth........mike

You have the correct name and it is an Oncidium. There is a very great range in Oncidium plants. Many have been moved to other named genuses, like the Pyscopsis Oncidiums, and I just checked and lanceanum has been moved to Lophiaris. However, I am sure that the registration of the hybrid you have will retain the Oncidium status, just cause it would cause too much trouble to try to correct all the previous hybrids made. Look up the culture for Oncidium lanceanum, and you can probably grow you plant by that formula. You plant does have bulbs, but they are very small and insignificant. Your plant will not grow like a Phalaenopsis, as your plant is a sympodial, not a monopodial, and you can expect a new growth from the base of the plant each year, just like other sympodials. Hmm, just looked up lanceanum in Bakers book on the Oncidium alliance. I hope Maureen is a warmer growing plant than laneanum. Lanceanum grows at about 9000 ft altitude and summer nightime averages are around 47F, with record high in the habitat around 86F and record low around 25F (-4C). The light requirement is the same as other Oncidiums, 2000 to 3500 fc and watering probably the same. Luci, can you check on the abreviation of the genus on the O. Maureen? There is a registration for an Odontoglossum Maureen, an Odontioda Maureen, and an Odontonia Maureen, but no Oncidium Maureen. I recall a hybrid of lanceanum (or the species itself) grown and bloomed by someone in Phoenix where cool temps are non-existant in summer, unless she grew it in her home, but I doubt that, so I suspect your plant will grow well with other Oncidiums. Hi, I did find the Onc. lanceanum...on the Maureen...the handwriting on tag is so bad but it is an "m"...Odm is the abbreviation. But on the listing it was Onc. Maureen x..???? Now I have to look up care for the Odm. The foilage is very nice to look at, I like the spots on the leaves. The new growths are growing in sort of a "piggy-back" fashion. Thanks all for your help....and thanks Cynthia for questioning Onc vs Odm! :-) |

OK, from what I can tell, your Odm (Odontoglossum) Maureen is mostly Crispum, a little harryanum, and a couple of unknown Odonts. Crispum and harryanum are cool growing plants, with night time lows in the low 50s all year, and 70 ish days. So keep you plant a cool as possible. Cynthia
