Cookara losing leaves I have a Cookara "Tropical Snowflake," which I got several months ago in fairly poor shape. It has been doing well for quite a while now, and has several new growths. When I potted it, it broke into three pieces, and now each of these pieces has at least one new growth. The problem is, the few leaves it had have been yellowing and falling off, and now there is only one section that has a leaf, which I think will also soon be gone. Otherwise, the plant seems rather healthy, with lots of new roots growing. I'm guessing this is normal, or rather, hoping this is normal. It doesn't look like any sort of fungus, but I did find a mealy bug on it once...but that hasn't been in a long time, and I haven't seen any since. I water when it needs it, about once a week, and it gets balanced fertilizer and Superthrive weakly, weekly. If it is not normal that it is dropping leaves, I guess that it may be too much light, or not enough water. The medium dries out quite well and I wonder if its not getting enough. About the light...I'm not sure if its getting too much or not. I have a phal under the same amount of light and it is doing amazing, as well as a few cattleyas and oncidiums. If it helps, this plant has Broughtonia, Cattleya, Diacrium, and Laelia parentage...and that I found on orchidspecies.com.

Yep, it was time to inspect the roots. The only live roots are the new ones. No bugs though. The roots are probably worse now, but I guess I forgot how sad of shape this plant was in when I got it. I'm just glad that it has all the new growths. I'm going to leave the dead roots on for now, for stablity. Any suggestions to help it keep going? I should make note that one of the new growths did die off, and I don't know why. Attached are pics.

Looks like 2 of the 3 pieces have some new roots. These will probably be OK, as new roots are the most important thing after the need to have living eyes, which your new growths certainly have. I don't think the separation of the pieces did much to slow down future developements, as each piece has at least 2 bulbs. If the pieces had all stayed connected, you would have had the option to remove one or two new growths to allow the single (or 2) growth to have all the energy stored in all those bulbs. However, most people would not want to do that severe a procedure anyway, so you will just have to wait until the several pieces each work their way back up to full size again. We orchid people seem to have the world's supply of patience. Cynthia Last edited by Cynthia, Prescott, AZ; 11-06-2006 at 02:33 PM.
