| Vanda in Bloom and More
Last week I had to move my orchids from one place to another a lot as we are in the process of expanding our house, so people are working on the garage which is also my grow are, this is what surprised me. Noid Vanda in Bloom Whole Plant Grammatophyllum backBulb (I got as a freebie) Grammatophyllum (Notice the void there) Nobile Dendrobium Noid about to bloom (i think) Dendrobium Phal Type Noid (in spike) Grammatophyllum (this got seperated from the previous, due to some mishandling during one of the moves) |

Pic #5 is not a nobile-type. It looks like it could be something from the Dendrobium Section (not to be confused with the genus Dendrobium - there are several sections within the genus Dendrobium one of which is also Dendrobium)

kevin my head is spinning just reading that? all i can understand is dendrobium, the others i'm still trying to make sense. Sorry, too advance for a newbie like me. Ok after reading it a few times, still not making any sense to me. You say there is a section Dendrobium under genus Dendrobium? Anyways i can't wait for this to bloom so that it could be id, this is a specie from the southern Philippines thats all i know for now. Thanks Last edited by delphiguy; 06-27-2009 at 07:16 PM. |

| Yes, that's correct. There are a few genera that contain sections with the same name as the genus. Dendrobium is one, Paphiopedilum is another. The sections within a genus exist to group plants of similar characteristics within the genus. If someone has a species orchid without a tag we can sometimes narrow down the possibilities by figuring out which section the orchid belongs to. This is especially helpful in a large genus like Dendrobium which hassomething like 1200 species in it. The section names are not part of the orchid's names so there's probably no need to get too deeply into sections. The names are more important.

kevin thanks im still a bit confused but i think im starting to have an idea of what your trying to say. I am aware that Paphs are divided into sections so if i understood you correctly your saying that Dendrobiums are divided into sections as well. Anyways you're right names are more important. |

Nice blooms. And those growths look great. More growths = more flowers.
