New hauls

Last Saturday we joined a horticulture group tour and at the end of the tour
is a orchid show where they sell various plants, including orchids.

We came home with a few orchids
Arachnis (based from orchidspecies its hookeriana please correct me if im wrong. IOSPE PHOTOS)
Vanda Mokara noid
2 x Cattleya (They have names written at the back of the leaves, forgot to take note of it.)
2 x Paphiopedulum phippinense (Does it have the same culture as that of paph. ciliolare?).

As you can see from the pics, we are still working on expanding our garden.

Thanks.

first one an aranda full sun easy to grow orchid. nut fuzzy about the conditoin as long as full sun is given to it.
third is mokara. Isn't that what you already have?

How did you come to this conclusion?

Paph philippinense (note spelling) is one of the warm-growing multi-florals. You can find info on how to grow them, here: Orchid Care for Phalenonopis & Paphiopedilum Orchids

thanks for correcting me on the aranda, i was told it was arachnis thats why i wrote it as such.
the mokara is a different shade of yellow, this is a bit darker than the first one.

kmarch
i was told that it was arachnis, so i search the orchid species website for the blooms of
arachnis and noticed the similarity of the blooms to the hokeriana. Oh thanks for spelling
correction also, im still getting used to typing those latin names.
I was worried about the culture for paph. philippinense as it is a bigger plant than that of my
paph. ciliolare. also my paphs are put in a pot with a medium of gravel, is that ok or should
i change medium?

trinigirl
thanks.

The identification of an orchid species generally can not be made by looking at pictures on the internet. Identification requires a detailed comparison of your flower's characteristics (both plant and flower) with a botanical description of whichever orchid species you suspect it is. This should be done by an orchid taxonomist. Many of the characteristics which identify an orchid are not visible in a photograph.

In addition to that, the interned, and yes, even the orchid species website, contains many mistakes. The orchid species website is not a taxonomically authoritative encyclopedia. It contains many mistakes and I recommend it not be used to ID orchids.

Yes I would recommend changing the medium. Did you read the Paph culture sheet I posted a link to? You'll see that paphs like to be gently and consistently moist. A moisture retentive mix wiht organic components is best. Gravel will neither retain mositure not will it provide the organic materials paphs need. I use a mix of:
bark chips
chopped sphagnum
peat
perilite
charcoal
and if available: shredded leaves.

kmarch
thanks for clarifying the proper way to identify an orchid. As for the culture notes, i havent had time
to read it this morning as i was getting ready for work, just gave it a read just now, and I am will be
repotting it in a mix of coco peat and perlite with probably a bit of charcoal, as that 3 is what i have
at the moment.

I have the aranda outside but its been raining non stop so i will be bringing it inside the house tonight
as i am afraid that it might get too much water and might damage the roots.

thanks

oh yeah, actually we could have gotten them in bloom but we decided not to, because
the bloom are already starting to fade and it cost 4x as much compared to the ones that
are not in bloom. The same is true for the Cattleya.

We cant wait for them to bloom also, hopefully we wont have to wait for a long time to see them bloom.
