New Bloomers

Here are my new bloomers. The First is Prince Merlot, 2nd is Mini River Bend Zuma Beach, 3rd (Here we go again) I have been waiting for this phal to open up for ever, it's name is..
MELON SELECT. This phal is a very dark wine color, not even close to Melon. Tara

Beautiful flowers to be sure!!! I especially like the last one with it's heavy pattern an very full shape.

Unfortunately the red flags started going off. The first name didn't send off any warning bells but the second one, Mini River Bend Zuma Beach, is far too long of a name. If I remember correctly the ICNCP limits the number of words a grex may contain to 3. And the last one just seemed odd. I mean I've seen some odd orchid names, but this one just seemed awkward.

So I started investigating.

Not a single one of those 3 names is a registered hybrid name. There is a hybrid registered with the name Zuma Beach so the second one is probably somethign crossed with Zuma Beach.

It's really a shame that breeders or vendors are so sloppy and careless with names and tags. Hobbiests like us often assume vendors are an authority on the orchids they sell and are experts in the field of orchids (both are assumptions we should not make) and that we can rely on them for correct information (yet another assumption we shouldn't make). To be fair, I'm not lumping all vendors into this negative category. We've seen that there are many who are authorities/experts on the orchids they sell and that their info can be relied upon.

I'm curious if you got them all from the same place or different places.

They're beautiful, Tara. Good work! I'll be interested to hear your response to Kevin... too bad we can't just take the names on the tags for correct.

First I will respond to what I know . The Mini is a cross between River Bend and Zuma Beach and that is all I know about that one. Kevin I could copy and paste the listing for you to see if you can fish any sense out of it? The others I will look closer by going into my purchase history, which will take a while, quite a pain. Again nver accidentally throw away your tags. If I dont get more for teh names from my purchase history I am goign to contact Baldans and see if they can Id these. Tara

Yes it is a very striking color, but very dark, I sent the pic to Baldans to see if she recognizes it.
