Wilsonara Golden Afternoon

Hello all.

This is my first post and my first orchid. I purchased a Wilsonara Golden Afternoon, we loved the smell and the look of it, a 2.5-3 foot shoot and a bunch of flowers. I bought one that with the flowers still closed so they are blooming right now. But I wanted to know some basics on how to take care of it. also should I transplant it or leave it in the small container it came in, it is a 5 in pot I think. I used a small bit of orchid fertilizer in water when I watered it the first time and I was told to water with warm tap water and water the plant in the bottom of the pot and not from the top.

Will it also get more shoots as well with more flowers? and how often will it bloom?

A picture would really help. If you post 4 more times, you can post a photo!

Very nice flower. And in case I missed your original post, welcome to the forum!

Your new orchid falls into the Oncidium Alliance of orchids. It is more of a medium light orchid. If you are growing it inside, an East facing window would be great. If facing south, make sure it does not catch direct light during the middle of the day. A North or West facing window might not be enough light.

If you are getting morning light, then I would guess it is already in an East facing window and should do great.

in general as thick an oncidium buld is as long it taks to water again. Depending on temperature, humidity levels and potting medium you are using it could be anything between 4-10 days. Leave the potting medium half dry before watering again. I leave the water to run through the pot instead of submerging every other watering.

this type of orchids belong to the Oncidium alliance. It normally flower once per pseudo bulb . So you can cut the flower spike once it is done flowering. Then the new shoots will appear from the base of the bulb. When the new bulb get sufficient light , water and fertilizer it will flower from that new pseudo bulb.
Lighting is very important , too low it will throw out more new shoots instead of only one. Too high you will burn the new shoots. A bright light area next to a south window will be good for the plant. You cannot expose the young plant to direct sun as it will burn the leave.

Hi here is a link for you:
AOS | Oncidium

If your flower stem is brown cut it down, still green leave it. I water my Onc. alliance plants by soaking or hosing them, and making sure there is a fan or a breeze to dry the leaves.
