New hauls

Ok, we took a long drive as we are having an itch of wanting to have new
orchids.

Here goes. Hope you'll like them, and I hope I have given them justice as i
am not a good camera guy. I just point and shoot with shaky hands.

Oh and if possible, if you could give ID's with them I'd appreciate it. Enjoy

And this is how they are now hanging in the garden at the moment. As the
sky decided to open up just when I was placing them in. I'll give them more
a permanent place in the garden this weekend.

Strange, I thought vandas would be better off being potted in medium, and not just open like that.

Also, digitalgate, I didn't know cattleyas could be open like vandas without any potting medium... O_O

Great haul! I love all the beautiful colors!

Digi, beautiful catt, I love the color and especially the spotting. Spots are turning out to be my favorites.

thank you all, the dendrobium will be a gift to my mother-in-law, and all the vandas are
ours hehe.

englandfx
i prefer my vandas to be hang like that no pot no medium, except maybe when theres
not enough good roots then i put in charcoal which i remove later when the new roots
forms. most people here mounts their vandas in coco slabs or drift woods, but i've
never seen a grower that placed their vandas in pots locally.

we are actually planning on buying a cattleya, but we always ended up with something else hehe.

Hey digital, aside from vandas, what other orchids out there that can be grown with
out any media and no pots? or is vanda an exception?

Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Aranda,Oncidium,... almost anything. But the reason why i did that is to prevent fungus attack. There are days where it rain cats and dogs. Putting charcoal or media would mean fungus attack. (too lazy to water, too lazy to apply fungicides, too lazy to move caused this method to work well) Most of the time Phalaenopsis would rot in my care if i put it into Sphag moss. So no media in the beginning , add media later when the plant is healthy and strong. Of course , they are slow growing in the beginning as water is not really available. But Crown rot is never heard of in this method. You do what ever you like and works. You might find my method of potting sloppy. That leave room for error for me. You have to have a method of raising the orchids in your care.

wow, i thought that it was only Vanda that could let all the root go aerial without any
medium. I'd love to experiment on some of my orchids if I can make them grow without
giving them any media nor mounting.

I have one grammatophyllum bulb that is already giving new growth, I have placed it
in a small pot thinking of transferring it later, but if I could let it hang then wow.

thanks digital for the tip.

Englandfx you don't need potting media as such, this will prove it.

Providing you have enough humidity the roots will keep the plant supplied with moisture.
Spraying the roots until they turn green is sufficient moisture for the plant as well if you water them.

Interesting.

I guess phals are not the easiest orchids to grow.
In fact, I think vandas are the easiest to grow.

they are for me the easiest, as long as you can give them water, me i do it 2x/day some
times more. and water until the roots turns green. some i know even dips them in a
bucket of water 2x a week. me i do it once or twice a month, in a bucket of diluted
fertilizer.

There's really no such thing as "easy" or "hard" orchids. Every orchid will be easy and will grow vigorously if they find themselves in the conditions they want. Likewise, every orchid will be difficult, grow poorly, and may die if they find themselves in conditions they don't like.

Hot & humid w/ bright light = Vandas-easy; Draculas-difficult

Cold & humid w/ low light = Vandas-difficult; Draculas-easy

8 months of hot and dry summer with not a drop of water = Cymb canaliculatum-easy; pretty much every other orchid-difficult.

agreed with kmarch. you find Phalaenopsis easy, i find Vanda easy, .... When you discover you are good in something. Go for it. -- Nike just do it.

Those belong to Willowbanks, I have a lot of images from his orchid collection to use as examples on what SHOULD be done to look after certain species.

If I can grow my orchids half as well as him I'll be a happy chappy.

PS the avatar is one of his "Boys", the other one I had with the cat and reflection was another of his "Boys" too.

Show off!!! And, Anton, I say that with unlimited amounts of respect, admiration, and envy!

Gorgeous vandas...I'm hoping to up my game with those and have some success soon. Apparently, my luck runs with the Oncidium alliance plants. GREAT growing, and you too, delphiguy!
