Old spikes still green

Hello all,

I have a Dendrobium NOID that flowered with two spikes last summer, and both of the spikes are still green. Is there anything that I should be doing with them?

I also have two mini Phals that have spikes that haven't died yet. Should those be cut anywhere or left alone?

for the Dendrobium. It probably abort flowering. You should cut it away. Let it regrow a new one. Your light source might be insufficient , temperature might be too cold for the plant. Pls look at the AOS cultural sheet for dendrobium for reference. For Phal. It is difficult to tell when type of phal you have. For some you can't cut as they will rebloom. For most you can cut as they will refuse to rebloom.

Yup going to check out that info as well... I have done a fair share of research but it seems to depend on environment, type and preference...
Cool that we are in the same climate, that helps edge the learning curve...

Can you post a picture. That will help in identifying the type you have.

Most times it's best for the plant to just cut old flower spikes off above the first node. You can sometime get phals to rebloom if you cut about the second node but you only want to do this if it's an old plant with plenty of energy. With younger plants it's usually best to just chop the spike and let it build strength for the next season.

It's very pretty...not sure what type tho- probably officially a NoID. Lovely deep purple colour.

Leave the phals for a while and see if they develop subspikes, which start as little nubby things at the nodes.

The dens- are you sure you aren't meaning the canes are still green? If it's the flower spike, with no flowers, chop it off. If it's a cane, leave it to produce energy for the plant.

Den- one thing for sure it is not nobile. You can safely , cut the spike away. There is no rest for this type of orchids.
