i'd go the q-tip-and-alcohol road, then spray down with a horticultural oil. what's a sedirea japonica again?

thanks, Janet! a Sedirea japonica is a fragrant orchid once in the Aerides group, but then recast into it's own species (experts can correct me if i'm wrong). these are native to Japan. here's an image of my plant. it's the one on the right.

I also do the q-tip with alcohol and go into the leaves. You can also spray it with alcohol. Then watch it and retreat. I also repot with new mix as they can get into the mix as well.

Put alcohol in a spray bottle and spray the plant making sure you get into all areas, particularly where the leaves join the stem. Spray daily to catch any newly hatched ones. Spray the plant away from any drafts/fans/etc to insure no damage from the alcohol and cold air. The alcohol will evaporate in a few minutes and then it is safe and will do no damage. If you keep getting a continual supply of adults, I would consider repotting into fresh media. Brooke |

ack! ok, i'll try that. thanks, everyone. i was worried that alcohol getting into all the crevices might cause node rot (for lack of a better description).

| This is brookn's recipe for devastating most forms of things that slither, crawl or jump on plants. Extracted from one of Jenny's posts. Bill Brookn's Dish Soap Recipe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10 drops dishsoap 1.8 ml cinnamon extract (about 1/2 tsp.) 2 cups tepid water adjust ingredients as needed. This is great for cleaning leaves, bacteria and fungal infections, bug deterrant, and now bug and slug killer |

am reading a back issue of the orchid digest, and see this as another recipe: 1 tablespoon ultrafine in a quart of alcohol, and spray. (ultrafine is a paraffin based horticultural oil.)

Just found mealies on my phals that were bloomin for about two months. All of sudden one whole branch of flowers curled up and looked like they were curling up. I looked at the blossoms carefully to find mealies all over the back of the blossoms and then found them on all of my other orchids too. I took them out side and sprayed then with and extra strenth worm tea mixture. They are falling off and I hope I got rid of them. I will have to try the other mixture one day. I hate those things!
