Papilionanthe teres

Dear friends,

Recently I bought a bare root Vanda teres (Papilionanthe teres) from an exhibition and now it has started flowering. I would be grateful if somebody can give some information about the culture of this species.

Regards - Mani

Mani,

Start with the Vanda culture notes here on thei forum or at AOS | Home. Look for the culture sheet on Vanda. The terete vandas can take even higher light than the regular Vandas. Give those culture sheets a read and let us know if you have any questions.

My Vanda teres produced flower buds, but the buds did not open and become black. What could be the reason? Is it because of the excess heat in Mumbai?

For terete it seldom happen in hot weather. But how hot has it been? Did it ever turn yellow or it turn brown then black? If it is the later case, it could be a insect problem. Look
inside and see if you can find any insect.

Hi Mani! The currently accepted name for this orchid is: Papilionanthe teres. Vanda teres is the synonym.

Typical Vanda care should be fine though the terete vandas can tolerate even higher light.

Dear Digitalgate,

First it was yellow in color. I thought it will bloom in a day or two. Then one day I saw it in black color and shrivelled. I have taken some video shot of it . Giving below the video. Please have a look.

too dry and too hot.Since it is a cutting it is not adviseable to give it full sun in the beginning. Diffused light until you see the first root appear, then introduce it to full sun.

Roots are growing, but very slow. Now it is in the full sun. Shall I keep in the diffused light area? Which fertilizer is best to use. I have put some dried cow dung in the pot.

Please help.

i see. since i has grown it own roots, it can handle full sun. But since you grow it in a very low humidity environment. I suggest you grow with direct morning sun and shaded afternoon sun.
