It sure is nice and the color is to die for. Is the price high? I don't know if it is or not. I wouldn't mind getting one too.

Price is only relative to how much you want it

You can justify just about anything this way

Think of all the happy times you two will have

i dunno, $35 for an adult plant within a year of blooming is one thing, but a 2.25 pot sounds like a seedling to me... oh well, i'll just have to keep an eye out for a sale.

So, I sent a message to Fox Valley Orchids to ask about the size of this Phrag and this is the answer:

Hi April,

With 10"+ leaf spans, the Phrag. Fox Valley Fireball seedlings in 2.25" pots are approx. 12 months from blooming. They normally bloom at 14-15" leaf spans in 2.25" pots. I'm attaching a photo of one we bloomed earlier this year, because the color is more accurate than the one on our `Online Specials' section of the web page.

Thanks,

Tom Kalina/ Fox Valley Orchids, Ltd.

I may have to get one!!!

You are welcome Janet! My birthday is coming up and I think I will have to have one!

My thoughts are: since it is a besseae hybrid you could grow it in a puddle of water.

yeah, i'm batting... .500? i have a phrag that i grew in a puddle, and it was quite happy, then i put it in s/h, and it's still quite happy.

then i have a jason fischer, which i grew in a puddle, and it languished, so i put it in s/h, and it continued to languish, so i put it back in bark, and it's still languishing. it's not quite dead yet... hence my hesitation to shell out what will likely be $45 by the time postage et al is included...

Hi, janet-a..... Yes my plant sits in about 1/2" of water, for my Phrags I use only rain water, I have most of them in one tub and for the long petaled phrags they are on risers so they just touch the water. The plants are under a 400w MH light. Hope this is of some help....... Jim.

well 35 dollars for a 2" pot looks a bit expensive for example one similar bessae (Phrag. bessae :: Schwerter Orchideenzucht - Das Orchideen Zentrum Westfalens) i have on my wishlist on a 10cm pot and a few months from blooming is 20Euros.

sorry april.

i may break down and just order the thing anyway. maybe i'll call and chat with them first. most growers i've encountered are pretty good about telling you if a plant you want is simply going to fall over dead in your conditions.

ooh pretty!!

ok, impulse satisified: i just ordered it.

will keep you posted if it falls over dead. (the grandparents are three species, but the parents are secondary hybrids, so hopefully it won't shrivel up and die they way the rest of the species i've tried have.)

just the one plant---i don't really have room for it, much less the other ones.

life was so much easier when i though slipper orchids were goofy looking things and i wouldn't be caught dead with one...

Thanks Jacqui! I can't wait to get them. I will be putting them in some different places than my other Phrags.
I will put two of them, the Inca Ruby and the besseae, on the half wall with artificial light and sunlight from east and west exposure. The Fireball will go in the kitchen next to the besseae that I already have and the Sorcerers Apprentice, with east exposure.

I hope they grow FAST!!!
