Talking Could these be seed pods?

I have this ropey thing tagged Lockhartia acuta (or aruta...it's written in pencil by someone who flunked penmanship). It has bloomed a bit with the tiniest little white flowers...and then one day I happen to notice these green bulging things. Does anyone know if they look like seed pods? In size they are like an elongated green (English) pea.

PS: Please don't laugh at how ragged the plant looks...it wasn't terrific when I bought it either...I just love weird looking plants.

I believe that Meyer's Conservatory will give you free flasks of your seed if it a species plant, and you have good photos of the parents. I know nothing about flasking, but I thought that this looked like a good bet. Congratz on the accidental parenthood.

Hi Mom, you may find this link interesting as it takes all the hard work and the brain damage out of producing plants from seed.

Your reaction is exactly how I reacted yesterday finding that my Restrepia muscifera had a pod ! Whoo hoo!

Congrats!!! I would be totally thrilled if that happened to me. Good luck finding a flasker. Can't wait to see what the final outcome will be.

Azure and Bill, thanks for the leads on who I might work with to pursue chidren (oh that was baddd). One question, though, Azure...this is the only Lockhartia...ohhhh wait....I have a NOID that looks sort of similar and was hanging in the same spot when I first got them...I'll take a photo of it tomorrow so y'all can render your opinion. But even if it is and one is the daddy and this one is the mommy, the daddy is not tagged. Still, this should be educational, if nothing else!

And Kortney, I guess I was so shocked to see these things because I keep reading about toothpicks and pollen and flower parts, and placement... I guess Mother Nature still knows how to get the job done from time to time...

Several orchids do self pollinate. The ability to self pollinate varies between species/genera but I find reasonable number of smaller flowered species will set seed by themselves. Presumably to shorter distance between the anther and stigma increases the likelihood of the pollinia contacting the stigma as the flowers collapse.

Yup Yup! Mine was magically pollinated too and like you I am not quite sure if it was crossed with one of my others (Restrepias) or if was selfed lol. That right there is enough to make me wonder and what see what they turn out like lol!

I have not experience any seed pods yet, even trying to hand pollinate some of the flowers but they just don't 'eat' the pollen or i'm doing it the wrong way.

Anyway, congrats on the bloom & the seed pod! Great growing!

Cheers!

Ok, I promised a photo of the other plant that may or may not be in this Lockhartia family...and as luck would have it the little guy is pushing out a couple of new flowers. For reference, this guy is mounted on a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch piece of tree fern. His flowers are about the size of a dime and are a waxy yellow. Can't recall if there's a fragrance.

If the plant is identifiable from the photo, I'd sure love to know! And as far as whether or not Miss acuta self-pollinated or had a bit of help from this mystery dude...well, I guess we won't know that unless I pursue the flasking thing, eh?

Well, as I live and breath, I guess I'm going to do the flask thing with my little pods! The Meyer's Conservatory suggestion panned out quite well ( Azure!). I'm registered and have uploaded photos and await my next set of instructions. From what I can read, they prefer to allow the pods to ripen naturally...I can just imagine me after much longer setting up camp out by the plant with a coffee filter held under the little things...

I'm stoked! If this ain't a kick in the pants, I don't know what is!

Well. I watched those darned pods...and watched...and watched....

And it's been sooo dry....

Last week it started raining, quite a bit and nearly every day and when I wasn't looking both pods just up and burst open on me. Oh well...

It was all for fun anyway. I took the two pods and tapped them in the crooks of two big ol' rough-bark trees we have...Nature played her part in the pods happening, so maybe she'll take the next step and allow something to grow!
