Question about Den spike

I have a phal type Den that finished blooming about 4 months ago. The spike is still green. Is this normal? The plant looks really healthy, leaves are all firm and shiny. It is getting a new cane which is growing very slowly. This is my only Den so I don't know if I should remove the old spike . Is it taking away from the plant? Do the canes always grow slowly?

I believe you have a Dendrobium Phal type (not the other way around). The reason the spike is still green is because your temperature is cold for the plant. When summer come the spike will suddenly wither in 1 week. There is no use for the spike. So go ahead cut it. Cane grow slowly because of low temperature. In
my area a keiki can grow from 1 to 5 inch in 3 days. Since spring is coming or in your case came. It would be good to put the plant outdoor Under a tree. Find a good spot that have plenty of morning sun. Try to do weekly fertilize as temperature raises as the new keiki need minerals and sunlight during active growing.

Thanks for the info Digitalgate, I think it is still too cool at night to put my Den outside. The AOS culture sheet says it needs to be at least 60 degrees at night. Our temps are still lower than that. I have it in a SE facing window where it gets sun for about 4 hours in the morn.

It will be fine! You can definitely cut the spike. Good luck with it!

Some dendrobium orchid lingo: The spike is the growth that has the buds and flowers on it. This can be cut back when the flowers have finished blooming.** The tall, cigar like growths are called pseudobulbs, or in the case of dens, canes. Do not cut the canes back as these are what gives the plants their strength, and where new growth comes from. **However, from what I can see on the picture, the plant almost looks like a nobile, in which case there is no spike, and therefore nothing should be cut off. It's hard for me to tell. Are the flowers growing up and down the cane, or are the flowers from a spike at the tip of the cane?

My Den definitely has a spike that had the blooms. It did not have flowers up and down the cane as KenFLs did.
