| Its Official
Its official, my wife and i are orchid addicts. We went to this place that sells orchids for a very low price compared to the garden store that we went to regularly. (Though farther, but it was well worth it) And low and behold there are orchids galore and my eyes popped with the diversity of the orchids that they are selling, We went there firstly to look at the place and secondly to get a couple of chids, we have actually set a budget limit of about 500 pesos (US$10) but we ended up spending about 3,000 pesos (US$60) and with that amount we went home with about 26 plants and 19 of which are orchids. The rest are Cabbage Cactus, Nephentes, Tillandsia. Id like to post all of the orchids that we've bought but there seems to be a limit with the number of images that can be uploaded. Anyways here they are, and to be honest with the exeception of Vandas I think we have bitten a bullet here as I dont know what they're names are and how to take care of them, one of the pictures that i wasnt able to upload is what we call Sanggumay it think its Dendrobium anosmum. We would greatly appreciate it if someone nice could ID them and give us some culture info with. Thanks a lot. |

First one is strap leave sandriana hybrid. Grow that in 50% shade. Grow inwood basket or plastic basket. with or without media Second is a quarter terete vanda. Grow this in FULL sun (might need to adjust slowly to full sun) grow this in pot with charcoal Third and fourth are mini Dendrobium 30% shade, can tolorate 50% shade and bloom in it. Five are JVB hybrid can be grown in Full sun But you need to acclimatise over 3 months. I grown mine in full sun, it also bloom in full sun as well. in pot and charcoal six are Brassvola or Laelia hybrid 50% shade. don't change pot for the time being. seven could be Vanda Miss Joaquim hybrid. Plant this in compost soil. in full sun Nine is a Phalaenospsis, it look like taiwanese hybrid. under 80% shade. Ten is Grammatophyllum 30 or 40% shade. mount this on top of inverted pot. without any media Last edited by digitalgate; 03-14-2009 at 05:49 PM. |

This one leave it on the mount. Hang 2metres above above ground in 50% shade. Withheld water for the time being. It is going to bloom. Bulb will drop if you water. ( you can slowly increase the height as time progress) The adult plant suppose to grow 2 m cane. You could have variety that bloom on a shorter cane, difficult to tell for the time being.

digital as always you've been very helpful to me. Thanks for ID'ing Grammatophyllum I just googled it and its a big orchid I have to think where I should place it in my garden. FLBob, yeah with the old garden shop that we were geting the orchids from, for the same number of orchids I have bought now I may have to shell out 10,000pesos or more (US$200) and thats a big difference, already we are planning our next visit there in about 2 weeks time. |

Yes i agree that's a great haul at an even greater price. Nothing beats having orchids in their backyard. The Philippines is a great place to get orchids too. Yes it's official, both of you are addicted. Sooner you will be going more frequently to nurseries to get more orchids. From 1 month once to 1 week once to twice a week... I'm trying to cut back my purchase and weekly visit, it's almost too difficult going home empty handed. Got to tighten belts in this economic crisis, better not spend too much! Cheers! |

jay, thanks it is a great haul. benetay, believe you me we have tried our hardest to resist the temptation of buying new orchids, it all started with just 1 vanda (I killed it btw), and the funny thing is that i never have imagined that i would be into orchids oneday and now we have about 25+ now it really is an addiction. and now im also hooked into another one, pitcher plants (nephentes), i bought 1 just last week and hang it along with my orchids and i love the way it looked with its pitchers. Now i just got to have more of it. |

Awesome! some really cool and interesting stuff! Photo #8 looks like something from the Oncidium alliance, with Tolumnia-like leaves. Nice specimen plant too. I wouldnt worry about the Gramatophyllum. It looks like it has a small growth habit. unlike its giant relatives this one looks like the canes are about the mature size. Im curious about photo#6. that looks like a psychopsis, the lime geen looks like some sort of bulbophyllum? and what are the others? wherever you got that stuff is awesome. |

I can't tell what number eight is. sorry, i have counted wrongly. i have change the above. But are you sure your and your wife is into this? Usually it is only one guy/gal who is addicted to it. |

Re photo #6, I think the three at the back are Cattleya Alliance plants with the 2 on the left being perhaps brassavolae hybrids of some type as digitalgate suggests, but I think the light-green leaved one at the front might be a Bifrenaria.

Same here delphiguy, you are not alone. She does all the picking of plants while we will tend to the plants. Occasionally when i'm too busy, she will take over the role until i'm less busy. Cheers! |

yep the wife does the picking of plants, but she never takes into gardening as she believes that she has a brown thumb as opposed to my green thumb which to my belief is a non-sense. well, just this morning we we're able to drive back to the place as we have some problems to take care with (great excuse to go orchid shopping i guess). we spend about 300 pesos with this one about US$ 6. anyways here are the new members of the family. as always we'd appreciate for the ID and culture notes. thanks |

First one look like oncidium. Looks like you have caught a very bad case of orchid flu and the only way to ease the pain is to buy more orchids! Well yes, i'm also trying not to buy so many nowadays. The only way is not to go but i can do mail orders too! Sigh, this temptation is really very difficult to curb. 5 Years ago, i told myself that i will not be interested in orchids, however i was proven wrong. Now i'm filled with orchid. That's another great haul at a very afforable price! Cheers! |

yep the first one does look like an oncidium it almost the same as the oncidium i've got about a month ago only there is no france with this one. the problem with this stalls is that they dont know the name of orchid they sell only the local name and most of the time you cant even understand it. hehe. yep, we've got a very bad case of orchid flu. cough cough hehe |

Although website do provide a method for ID but it cannot be 100% sure unless it's a species or a hybrid that is easily IDable. Maybe next time you can show him a book so he knows which is which. Cheers! |
