Oncidium Care

Cheers,

I've bought an Oncidium from a local garden shop and it is already in bloom
which has a hint of vanilla. However I have no idea on how to properly take
care of these baby. Also I'm attaching an image of it because some of the
leaves are broken or folded. Should I be concerned of this?

Thanks.

A little leaf damage is o.k- eventually there will be lots of new growth to "cover it up"! I would re-pot it in a bark/charcoal type mix, though. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like old sphagnum...
Here's a link...AOS | Oncidium

Good luck! It looks like a real cutie!

this one should known as sherry baby. Easy to care of as you have shade in your garden. Just water , fungicides, fertilize. without any special treatment .

your plant looks pretty good
I would not worry about the leaves to much

it looks to be potted in a fine bark mix to me

the blooms are very nice
read the culture information and if you have any questions please feel free to ask

Oh just mentioning the smell makes me hungry! I love oncidiums. I have several, I think they are pretty hardy plants. I agree with the others the leaves will be ok! Good luck and good growing!

There are a lot of fragrant orchids.

Most Cattleya have some scent and some very strongly perfumed.

The next two months are blooming season for Maxillaria teniflora, the coconut orchid. It has a strong coconut scent. My first bud opened today. By next month there will be thousands.

I have the same one flowering in my kitchen in Queensland Australia, right now.Beautiful!

I have no sense of smell (genetic thing) but husband and visitors say it smells like caramel.

I have another one I bought last year, and I stuck it in the garden in the pot, sort of half covered in ferns, (and forgotten about) and it's doing well.

I bought mine flowering a couple of weeks ago, and it is starting to drop flowers . Oh well they can't last forever. If they did, they would be those horrible plastic ones you see occasionally.

You just have to keep buying them (that's my motto anyway) so you always have some in bloom (and hopefully keep them alive until next year to bloom again). Do you have street sellers or markets nearby? When I lived in PNG I often bought orchids from street sellers (and cheap too!!). Unluckily my dog liked to chew them up.

Yes, we do have street sellers near where I live. But the variety is not many and the price
is kinda steep in Philippine Peso. We get our plants from Manila its about 100km drive
but theres a lot of variety to choose from and price is reasonable.

Cheers,

When I got home from work today I noticed that there are some black spots
on my oncidium that are not there before. This concerns me because in my
experience this leads to yellow leaves. I thought that maybe it may be insect
eggs what do you think?

thanks

look like normal fungus to me. It seem For Oncidium Sherry Baby, without these black dots the flowers will not smell that good. If you are worried give it short direct morning sunlight
from 7am to 9am to reduce the problem. The problem will not go away it will stay with the plant. Mostl oncidium seem to have this problem that refuse to go away.

thanks digital, so this is not going to result in the yellow leaves that I have been getting
lately. Unfortunately from where I live I can only get direct sunlight from 11am onwards
which is too hot for most of my plants.

My sharry baby (flowering now) also has these spots (quite a few). Doesn't seem to be affecting the plant tho.

I've found them to be spotty as well and don't particularly care for that. Something else to worry about.

My sharry bsaqby had black spots on the leaves when I bought it, and I've gotten five new pseudobulbs, so they're definitely not hurting anything. I've read numerous places that they come from getting lots of light. This doesn't mean too much, just a lot, the more light they get, the better they flower, or so I've read.
Mine hasn't gottten any black spots on the newer leaves, and it has not bloomed this year, I've now moved it to a southern window with sheer curtains, used to be east facing window. I really missed the smell, I hope it blooms in the fall.
They say it can bloom twice if you take really good care of it, fall and spring.

its my first time taking care of oncidiums, so at the moment it is testing me. One of the
pseudo bulbs turned yellow and died, and now the leaves are turning yellow, the roots
looked fine, so im guessing that i am giving it more sun that it should have. I am going
to move it to a shade and see what happens.

I have one sharry, one that is probably a sharry, and a Brassidium and all three have those little spots on the younger leaves. They all appear to be happy and the other orchids have not picked up the spots.

I also have sharry babys with spots on them. An older one, has always had spots, and the plant is sending out 2 new bulbs.

A newer one I got a few months ago from a different grower, also has spots on the leaves, and it is in bloom now. I guess these orchids have spots on them. Mine do not seem to mind getting a lot of sun.
