| Just couldn't leave it alone, had to water it
Well, I have finally arrived at that point where there is nothing left for me to learn the hard way. About the middle of last year I bought a bare-root noid nobile type den. Vendor said it might bloom early in the spring (now). Now, it has been finely writ on this learned forum no less than 20 to 30 thousand times to LET THE DAMN THING DRY OUT IN THE WINTER. I used to be a fairly intelligent guy. Practiced law for a long time. I read all 30 thousand threads. And then...and then...watered it once a week. All winter. Prayed it was a Yamamoto. Well, a few weeks ago, lo and behold! Nubs (2) appeared and grew like arms on a cactus and I was joyful, though they did begin to look a little odd for buds. Then, it became apparent - my buds grew leaves and the stems grew roots. My nobile now has 2 perfectly healthy keikeis and I have maintained a blooming record with nobiles unblemished by success. So I guess Yamamoto had folk like me in mind when he developed his moron-proof orchids. Next winter, I wouldn't water that plant if it left me a suicide note and headed out in search of rain.

| Loved the post. It was very amusing and if you could flesh it out with a few more characters it would make a good short story. It has the best ending that makes the reader happy; alls well that ends well. Bill |

![]() That is too funny! I just got a Den Oriental Smile and it looks wonderful, though I think I can continue to water it during the winter or I would have the same problem! I would love to see a picture of the orchid in question!

I do not find water is the cause of my keiki but any nitrogen will cause keiki to grow at the expense of flowers. You need to totally withhold fertilizer after about August in Florida. Do not give up yet the keiki may still flower. That happens a lot for me. Flowering is also dependent on the genetics of the plant. I have 30 that I got real cheap (now I think anything was too expensive) that are not Yamamoto Dens. They keiki a lot and few flowers. All get the same care, Some I even put separate to get even less water and fertilizer. Still few flowers. The Yamamoto flower like monsters. Even the six inch plants are flowering this year.
