I have some Cym's that are indoors for the winter. I am not sure if this is a new growth or spike. What do you think??

Thanks!

I think it is new growth. (I just asked the same question on a noid orchid) so I'm no expert by far. But I just got a cym and the flower spikes come from the middle of the existing growth.

Thanks! I will hope for blooms next season, when they are a bit more root bound!

April my spikes come from the same area as the new growths...same as in your pic. While I'm no expert on cyms...and basing what I saw on my cyms...your 2nd growth looks like a growth rather than a spike. The first one...too small for me to tell. I don't know if this helps but my spikes were much fatter and a bit more rounded in appearance than the growths are.

It's one of those things where now that I've seen it...I can recognize it but I'm probably not describing it very well.

Cym growth or spike

Hi April, I am not an expert either. But what I do to give me more info on growth or spike is to feel and pinch the new growth. I find that if it feels nice and round it is a new spike, if it feels flat it is only new growth. Of course only time will tell. This is one of the joys of owning orchids, there is always something that is now a secret to look forward to! Hope it is a spike for you. Nancy

Renee

I have 2 Cyms and both are getting new growths now. I too was hopeful for spikes. I guess this may be the time for new growth. I know next to nothing about orchids so I'm only telling you what mine are doing now. Have they already bloomed? One of mine has finished blooming and the other still has some blooms left.
Keep us posted.

Margaret

It is way too early to tell, but the first one might be a spike and the second a growth. This is cym spike season but they throw growths now also, so let us know what youend up with.

I lied. My spike come from the base too. Sorry about that! I went and looked at it today. I've only had the plant a few days.

I ask the same question when ever mine start putting out new growth, I have learned to be patient and it will tell me in due time. I have some like that now.
