Wild orchids in Florida have always been scarce and hard to find. Fish and Wildlife agents I know once spent a week searching the Fakahatchee and not find an orchid.

Corkscrew is a beautiful place but it is a bird sanctuary not know for orchids, except for the single blooming of the ghost orchid once in the past 16 years.

Both places are worth a visit, but don't expect orchids.

I have the name of a group that runs bike trips through the Fakahatchee if you have any interest.

Not sure where you are staying but Sanibel Island and Captiva beaches are worth seeing. And there is the Ding Darling sanctuary. The Edison House. Jerry will know what is worthwhile, he lives down there.

thanks folks; i'm going down to (among other things) do one of Save the Manatee's kayak trips, and will be driving past corkscrew on the way to naples and past the fakahatchee on the way to KW, so i figured i'd better stop.

i was happy to see the fakahatchee has a boardwalk--for some reason i thought the only way to see things was to pull on your bib waders, spray yourself down with deet, and carry a stick to shoo away the snakes as you wade through it.

JEALOUS Jealous!!! I love kayaking among sea creatures!!! Our local sea lions think it's real funny to come up behind you and snort! It scares the heck out of me but it's always funny.

Jerry is right off I-75 in Ft. Myers. Maybe you could visit his greenhouse.

i'm probably going to be sticking closer to the coast--besides, i wouldn't want to bug him.

i see from his schedule that he's doing something on the 14th though--if i'm in the area i might swing by.
