Fire-Escape Rainwater Collection; Contamination?

Hello,

I have bee convinced by various sources at this point that the best thing for the orchids is genuine rainwater. It is aerated on the way down, along with picking up dust and nutrients that are either dissolved or floating around in the air itself.

My question is this: If I collect rainwater from my fire-escape, much of the water is dripping into my bucket off of the painted, sometimes rusty fire-escape. Should I worry about dissolved iron (from the rust) or bad stuff in the paint? What is an orchid's sensitivity to iron?

Thanks so much for any help you have. I don't want to buy much or any distilled water when a better choice falls from the sky all the time around here!

Cheers,

Super Pitted

Before we speculate on the quality of that water, let me ask you this: is you water supply in common with the rest of NYC? If so, you need not bother as your tap water is some of the best in the country for orchids...on the order of <50 ppm TDS.

Hi,

Yes, I have municipal NYC water. It's nice water for the orchids? I've heard it's good water from the pizza man and the bagel bakers of course, and my aquarium friends say it's very low in dissolved minerals etc., but I thought rainwater might be even better.

Am I all good with NYC tap water after just letting the chlorine evaporate?

Thanks!

I don't think the rainwater will hurt your plants. A little iron is a good thing.

Yep, in NYC you're blessed. Besides the low TDS, NYC is one of the few large municipal systems that still use chlorine, which you can evaporate out if you wish, as opposed to chloramine, which isn't as easily removed.
