Breaking winter rest

After learning that I have a few dendrobiums that require a winter rest, I put them on the lowest shelf of my light stand and have withheld water from Halloween until Valentine's day...with only an occasional "taste" of water.

All of the culture sheets I've read have talked about gradually reducing water as winter approaches, but none mention how or when to go about increasing water once it passes.

The dendrobiums in question are aphyllum, aggregatum (possibly jenkinsii and/or lindleyi), and loddigesii.

What do you recommend?

These usually flower after their winter rest. You could water lightly when they bud and then as the new growth starts, increase watering gradually until the plant is in full growth mode and you're watering regularly.

Thanks, Kevin. They aren't doing much of anything yet, so I'll keep ignoring them a bit longer!

This is actually a good thing...I've been a bit overwhelmed with the watering responsibilities around here lately. I've "over-indulged"...and yet, I keep buying more orchids. What do they call that again??

The dens that like a winter rest want it dry, cold and as sunny as you can give them. Get them off the bottom shelf and put them in the best light you have. Buds should start showing up along the canes eventually.

That is the best light I can give them. They're under my T5s, it's cold near the floor (in the 50s), and I have a hard time reaching them from the wheelchair, so they don't get watered. I bloom brassavolas under that light (on the top shelf), so if it's not enough, I ain't got it!

If it's going to be enough, I guess we'll know sooner or later. If they don't bloom, off the the OS raffle table with them!

Well, if you can bloom brassavolas there, then perhaps it will be enough for the dens. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Katherine,
My Den. aphyllum only started budding when I placed it like 8 to 10 inches from a daylight 100 watt cfl bulb clamp light on a shelf. Lost the first ones due to humidity and it getting bumped and it falling out of its pot all the time so it got a new root and I mounted it it poped a few more buds hanging about 10 inches from the same light. Now its got more roots popping out too. Its a seedling I bought you've seen my threads and I've been watering it normally now for about a month because its been active where I was just dampening its moss when it got crunchy when it was resting once a week just sips. Maybe yours just need more light and warmth to start popping.
Move them back up to the light......
