| need help with my new addition I just got my order and do not know what to do. I purchased the following plants: Ascocenda Bigness X Korb Fah Vanda Pure's Wax Rhynchostylis gigantea 'Orange' Phalaenopsis Tien Nong Stripe X I know that I can grow all vandaceous in a vanda basket with out substrate (please correct me if I am wrong), but I am confused with this size of plants I got. May I put it in a basket without substrate, or Do I have to pot it in a substrate? I am attaching the pictures so you can visualize the size. |

What you have is seedling. Extremely difficult for newbie. i start those babies with charcoal (cheap for me) pine bark is expensive. lots of sun for the Vanda.(about 5000 foot candle) medium amount of light(4000 foot candle) for Rhychostylis. 3000 foot candle for Phalaenopsis. you can experiment with different medium if you want but you only one of each. You have to start somewhere anyway. Oh, you need a light meter to know how much is 5000 foot candle. For comparison, full sunlight is 10000 foot candle. |

Thank you so much digitalgate. Now I feel much better with all help I got. I did not expect this size I thought it would be a little bit bigger. Well, will see. I just hope I can handle it. I think I will go with pine bark (I do not too many plants yet) and put it on a kitchen window sill. It is a bright window and sun only around 4PM-5PM and vanda I will put in my bedroom it has more sun. ![]() Helen. |

the first two vanda is high light plant. you need minimum 4 hours of bright sunlight.NOT direct sunlight that will cook the plant. Rhynchostylis and Phalaenopsis can be put together as they do not need as much light but still need at least 3 hours of bright diffused sunlight. you need to put the plant about within 1 feet of windows (No direct sunlight). If you have morning sun say 6.30am to8.30am that would be best. you can put them in direct morning sun, it does wonders for you and the plant. Remember to move them as it get hotter. It will cook the leaves if you are not careful. Use a alarm clock to remind you. |
