Info on new Orchids

Hello. I live in Southern California, San Fernando Valley. I grow my orchids outside in a shade house. I am looking for more specific information on a couple of Orchids I have. What conditions work best, what type of orchid they are, etc.
BRSDM. Flyaway 'miami' .
EPID. ilbaguense

I am not sure of what type they are and what the names mean.

BRSDM = Brassidium = Brassia x Oncidium
The plant grows into a large specimen plant quickly under normal Oncidium culture. Long spikes with up to 40 flowers each!

EPID = Epidendrum Ibaguense (not a normal abbreviation - usually it is abbreviated EPI). Comes from Columbia - part sun to full sun. From what I read it sounds like it is very vigorous and easy to grow!

Good luck. mike

Your epidendrum is an easy orchid to grow. When it flowers and you don't cut the flower stalk, it will grow keikis from the old flower stalk. That's what happened to mine. It's a quick growing orchid and you'll get alot of plants from it.

BRSDM. Flyaway - is a spider orchid. It flowers once a year in the summer. It likes light levels around 2500 foot candles. Summer noon sun is about 10,000 in the southern half of the US. Numerous flowers come from long stems up to 2 feet long and the flowers are about 4-5 inches each.

The Epidendrum you have is the weed of the orchid world and will grow very well outdoors in the San Fernando Valley. I have lived in Sun Valley and Glendale, and they always did well. The Brassidium may do well too, but you may want to keep it close to the house in winter, as it is probably a little less hardy. Cynthia, Prescott, AZ, an escapee from Southern California

This is not a cool grower like the reedstemmed epis, but a fairly warm grower. I had a very large stamfordianum that wouldn't bloom, so, not checking the web first, I put it in the cold frame thinking all Epidendrums can take a little cold. I wound up rotting off all the new growths and a lot of the old. It took a couple of years to recooperate from the mistake. So, learning that it was a warm grower, I hung it in the warmest (hot) and brightest end of the greenhouse. After the new growths finally got back up to size, it bloomed magnificently. Course, that plant turned out to be virused and is long gone now, and the seedling replacement has a long way to go before blooming.
