Garnet beauty is on a distinguished road
Buds not opening, Losing leaves

Hi All.
I received a dendrobium as a gift and I reall want to keep this one alive. It is flowering, was flowering when received. It is potted in gravel in a plastic pot with holes on the bottom. I have been watering it twice a week with two to three days in betwen each watering. The leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. I lost three leaves last week and another is truning yellow today. What's going on and what can I do?

All assistance appreciated.

does the dend have a name? on a plastic tag in the pot? that helps. jmho it could be shock from moving from greenhouse to household conditions. don't get desperate it could take a plant a month or a few to aclimate to your conditions. how much light are you giving it?

dens lose a lot of leaves especially when new.

there is probaly nothing wrong. Expect to lose all the leaves over about 2-3 years which will be replaced by new canes fulled with leaves.

As long as you get new growth from the base afte the flowers end the plant is heathy and dropping leaves is just part of the life cycle.

You might consider watering just once a week, but giving it lots of water at once. They say you can never water an orchid too much, but you can water it too often.

Dens can take more water when growing, so you are probably OK. When the growth matures, you need to start cutting back on watering to a wet/dry patten. During winter, both Nobile types and the warm growing Phal Dens like a longer dry period. Cynthia, Prescott, AZ
