Question Odd Growth

Very new to orchids. My orchid has what appears to be two leaves and one root growing approximately 12" above the pot on the stem/stalk. What do I do? Also, I think my orchid was about to bloom, but the "bud" seems to have dried up and yellowed. Was it too dry?

do you know what kind of plant you have? but in general:

keikis (hawai'ian for "baby") can form on flower stalks on phals or canes on dens. they're a form of asexual reproduction and basically a new little plant grows out of a growth node. leaving it on the stalk can sap energy from the mother plant, so you may want to take it off and pot it up, but wait to do so until it has a collective four inches of roots of its own.

bud blast: it happens. could be a change of temp, or a sudden change of condition, or the plant just being huffy. i had a den i'd been trying to get to rebloom for four years, and it grew a spike, and it grew buds, and they got big, and the first one shrivelled up. man was i PO'ed. the rest of the buds grew and bloomed just fine though (for two months in fact).

can you post a pic of your plant? we love pics.

your growth with a leaf and root is a keiki and can form on dendrobiums and oncidiums as easily as Phals. Enjoy it

Buds do not always develope there is nothing you can do now. Sorry.
