Right orchid for me?

Can I reasonably have orchids in my climate? I brought my last orchid (a phal) home, a lovely, healthy plant, when it was -40 outside in the middle of February. The blooms hung on for a few weeks, but the buds all dropped, and it didn't ever really recover from that cruelty I don't think. I live in an apartment in Edmonton, so Northern sunlight, cold, arid climate most of the year, and summers can be anything from room temperature (most of the time) to the 90 degree heatwave we've had all this year (also dry). No A/C so I tend to keep the windows open all summer and take the 90 degree daytime and 50-60 overnights. No possibilities for installing growing lights or anything else too complicated as it is a rental. The unit is West-facing with a nice big patio door that way if that makes any difference, and I have a skylight on the Eastern side (but no windows on that side).

What would be a good orchid for my situation (if any) and what are some good tips and tricks for keeping it healthy and happy?

I am sorry I did not see your question last week.

A lot of people in Canada grow orchids in your conditions.

Your temperature is not a problem except for new purchases. Lossing buds is a problem in the winter. After they get established they should do fine.

Your house conditions are fine for growing the orchids. You will only have to see they get enough sunlight to bloom.

Measuring light levels with an SLR camera

measure the light levels and place each type of plant where it can get enough light. You can move them outside for the summer if you want. You will have a short growing season, so plants that bloom multiple times a year may only bloom once for you.

Start with easy orchids. The Phal should do well for you and next time it should not drop the buds. Dendrobiums are another easy to grow orchid.

If you want to try some cattleys near the window, pick the semi-minatures that do not grow over 8 inchs. They will be easier for your space.

Ask more questions when you are considering specific plants.
