What is this white thing growing on the side of my dendrobium?

Hello everyone!

So here's my first post. First, let me say you all make an awesome forum. I'm so glad I found you.

My dendrobium that I've had for five months now seems to have gone dormant since the flowers shed and the spike dried. I was watering it this past Sunday and decided that I hadn't seen the roots ever so I scraped out enough bark to just see the top of a root or two. It turned out to be a lot so I didn't put it back. In the process I exposed this little white thing on the side of the big cane. It's opposite the two other small canes. Here's a pic I took of it:

Thoughts? Theories? Speculation?

Thanks a bunch!

Newly found orchid addict,

Rick

Hi, that is a new growth. Welcome to the forum.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius

Hi Rick and to the forum

What you have there is a pic of a new growth coming up. (new cane)

As for posting pics, you'll be able to as soon as you get 5 posts placed on the forum

Again welcome! There are many members here that would love to meet you and hear about your orchids. We love pics too. You can introduce yourself in the introductory section of the forum.

Also it would be great if you could go to your profile and update your location as members here are from around the world, and if you ever need advice, different locations = different advice.

Thank you both very much.

Glad to hear it's a new growth. Strange it's growing on the opposite side of the other canes.
