What kind of new growth is this? I'm kind of hoping it's another 'stalk', 'plant' -what is the proper term for more of the same orchid but not a keiki? ![]() And just for fun, here are the roots of one of my mounts growing to the wood. I don't know if they are supposed to grow around the wood or into the wood? But this one is growing! ![]()

| The first pic is a nice new growth. That's the way the plant grows from the end of the rhizome. It will get bigger, and grow upwards. Then a leaf, the bottom swells into a new pb, and then a bloom! The new roots can come out now, or sometimes after the new growth.-It depends on the plant. The roots look great! I love how they grow all-over. They have a personality of their own!

Celcat, I'm not sure but I think the first is Oteare Island Flare. I was going to repot the plant but I take it this is now the wrong time, what with the new growth starting up?

Everybody says orchids 'attach themselves to wood'. What does that mean? Roses don't really attach themselves to anything so I'm completely outside my depth here.

I was saying cattleya, because one of my chid has a similar growth, see the pic, mine is a bit at a more advanced stage. Actually, it is a cross between Brassia, Lealia and cattleya. Some of my orchids, I repot them when I see sign of new growth. Like this, the new roots will adapt better to new medium than the old ones. But then for the milto, I will repot them just after flowering. Good growing

Jirel, * attach themselves to wood * When orchid roots grow along a surface, they sort of "stick" to the surface as they go along. The velamen has a way of "gluing" it's self to the surface. Have you tried to re-pot an orchid and the roots sort of peel off one side of the velamen? They can do this to a pot, or to a branch in nature, or to a mount. I am not sure exactly how this "sticking" is accomplished. If anyone knows please tell me.
