| Default What do they call this type of container planting? I am new to orchids, but I saw a picture of a container planted orchid I really liked. I have no idea what the correct terminology for this type of planting is in order to look up more information on what it would take to maintain a plant in one. Is there any chance someone might be able to tell me what it is called.? BTW - At first after looking around I thought it was called a terrarium, but that seems to refer to plantings in an aquarium style of setup from what I have seen. Thanks in advance The tall apothecary jar in the middle is the one I am referring to. |

| The short fat ones are cloches I believe and the tall one is an apothecary jar. But would this be considered a terrarium? Any suggestions where I might find information on high humidity orchids for such a container? Thanks |

| I know someone on the forum is growing Ghost Orchid in a jar set up for the high humidity it requires. I can't remember who now. Someone will come along and let you know.

| Hi I think the whole 3 are some type of glass bell chambers like they used in the old days to keep the humidity and warm on tropical orchids/plants. Although the tall skinny one is the first of its type I have ever seen. The other 2 big wide ones were rather common in the old days. My 1/2 penny worth. Cheerio Ron |

| That Phal looks beautiful in that glass jar, but it wouldn't last but a couple of months tops in that jar-no air. We had a discussion about these when someone recieved one as a gift, I don't know of what type of orchid would grow best in one of these, maybe someone else has an idea.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius |

| I believe terrarium gardening refers to any plastic or glass type of container over the plants. It doesn't have to be aquatic plants. Your thread is a bit of a coincidence, cos I've signed up for a terrarium gardening workshop next weekend! See Terrarium Gardening Workshop If it's any good, or relates to orchids, I'll definitely post details on how to do it here. |

| Hi, and ! I'm the one with the ghost orchid in a jar... I think that the picture is very pretty, but I think it was put in there for show. Maybe grown in there with the top off, and a fan pointed in there.. If that plant was to grow in there all the time, it would be rotted pretty fast. Blight, whatever. Most orchids need air circulation as well as some humidity. The ghost orchid that I have is the first one that I had heard of that recommended NO fan.Good luck with your search.

| As I understand it the lid is suppose to be taken off for a short period on a regular basis when you see condensation forming on the inside.... does this change anything in regards to the livability of an orchid in such a container? |

| Bluelude1, Not in my opinion. Most orchids thrive on lots of nice fresh air circulation which is nearly impossible to get inside a glass bell with no ventilation.

| Mainly this is done for show and not as an actual set up. Now if you are trying to grow a "Ghost" orchid, then you would consider something like this. Right Patti ?
