| THese intergenerics ending in -ara are based on someone's name and then -ara is added. In this case, Maclellan-ara. Just pronounce as you would the name, then add -ara (ah-rah). For other things, such as Potinara (Potin -ara), Fredclarckeara (Fred Clarke -ara), you just have to break the ara off and detemine how you would pronounce the name. -Cj |

| Firecat, Exercise a little care when using that pronunciation guide. Actually just forget it. It's full of mistakes. I stopped counting at 13 mistakes. Many of the suggested pronounciations don't even have the correct number of syllables. Here are just a few examples: Odontioda The pronunciation indicates there are 2 "N" sounds when the spelling indicates only one "N" sound and it indicates only 1 "D" when there should be 2. Worse yet the pronunciation indicates the second (non-existent) "N" sound is the accented syllable. The correct pronunciation is oh-dont-ee-OH-dah And another particularly bad goof-up: Stanhopea: stan-hope-ear Stanhopea is 4 syllables, not 3 (stan-HOPE-ee-ah) and Stanhopea does not end with an "R". EEEK! and this one: Pterostylis: pet-ro-sty-lis PET!?!?!?! No, no, no. It's TER-o-styl-us. The consonant cluster "Pt" is pronounced as a "T" not as "PET". Ugh.... It gets better! Here's one they misspelled first then mispronounced according to the way they misspelled it: Pleurotharlis: plu-ro-thar-lis. There's only one "R" in Pleurothalis and it's not plu-ro, similar to Pluto, it's pler-oh. I think I've made my point. Ugh...I recommend getting a good orchid encyclopedia like Alec Pridgeon's. It will give you pronunciations you can rely on. Don't use online one linked to above...please?

| Pronounce Guide Wow, Thank you Kmarch, I was trying to memorize them and I guess I have to start over. Just as well, I certainly don't want to sound Dumb if I start talking to the pros. I am having such a good time with my Orchids. I look at them every day, tend to their needs as I see fit, and I guess they expect it by now. LOL. Hope you have a great day... MIlt |
