Talking Phal in the bin

Hi all,
I was visiting the local nursery today and found that they had thrown away what I think looks like quite a healthy phal. The reason given was that the flower had broken off. One leaf was also damaged.
I've never had any luck with phals. They last at most 2 months, before dying - mainly to root rot. I will really try hard with this one. It seems to be a good flowering plant, cos I can see a previous spike. This is the first time that I'm looking after a new phal, since joining this forum, and I'm really incentivised by everyone's good advice and comments.

In Singapore, the phals usually come in these plastic bag-type of pots, which are bad for rotting roots. So I've repotted it in a bark mixed with some spaghum and cut off the flower spike, with hope of another flower coming soon. The roots were in pretty good condition, and there's a new green root coming out. I can't understand why the nursery would chuck it out?
Despite what the gardener said, I'm quarantining it, incase there are any diseases or pests.
fingers crossed that this one lasts...

Anyway, I'll be hanging out in the nursery's rubbish bins regularly from now on!

That has a good looking root system--can't believe they threw it awayark:Oh,well their loss is your gain If root rot is a problem, be sure to give it good air circulation and keep a bottle of H202 on hand. Let us know how she is doing and good growing

From your pic the plant looks good shape. Keep us posted on further growth and keep watching the bins at the nursery!

It doesn't look too bad to me. The leaves at least look crisp. It does look like it needs a good repot though. Let us know how it goes with your rescue.

I got it at the Far East Flora bins near Queensway.
But my mum had just bought a Phal and 2 bags of manure, so perhaps that's why they were in a good mood to give away free ones.
Digitalgate, where do you get $5 phals? If I manage not to kill this one, I would love to start getting more. It's lovely having orchids in bloom and even nicer if you can get it to bloom yourself!

BTW, to all the Singaporeans out there, Far East Flora along Queensway is having a sale. Very nice large dendrobiums at $12 (that's about US$8.50) and their phals are going at $15!
buy buy buy!

Here's a picture of one of the dendrobiums I bought over a month ago, so the flowers have started to wilt.

Hi everyone,
Thought I'd post a picture of my "phal in a bin", to show that it's doing well. I spotted a new leaf on Monday - though it was only visible enough today to get a picture.
The bottom most leaf is turning yellow and leathery. I hope that it's just the natural time for it to drop off. There are also 3 new green-tipped roots, so hopefully it's going to be okay!

The other picture is of a noid dendrobium, that I've previously had in a pot for 6 months, and it never did anything, except for losing a leaf or two. 2 weeks ago, I tried mounting it on a log (inspired by Flaco's log in a pot project), and I've just discovered a green "something" coming out. Looks like it's a new branch, as it's going up not down. Isn't it nice when your orchids are able to "talk" to you, to tell you what they like and don't like?

For those that can't see the bit of "green" coming it out, it's on the bottom of the 5th cane from the left side. This pic was taken on Monday and since then it's grown a bit more!

Good luck and keep us posted.

How come everyone is finding these freebies and I'm not? Oh yeah, I hardly have time to go shopping. I buy almost all my plants online now. No free offers on the net. Shucks!!!

Yiu Lin they are looking good. The Phal. and Den. with new growths. Keep up the good work. Pretty soon your going to get blooms!

BTW, I just wanted to add that it's only through all the good advice that I've been getting from orchidgeeks that these two orchids aren't dead!
