Talking Finally - they bloom!

After a LONG spring, my original two phals have FINALLY rebloomed! The past two years each has been in full bloom by mid February. The first blooms opened on May 30th and 31st, so I thought I'd share some pics. Phew!

[Plus, I convinced myself to buy two new phals, in bloom, to keep me happy during the wait. They are still flowering.]

Beautifiul! Do you have a name for the last one? I have one very, very similar only, peloric and NoID.

Had they bloomed when expected, they would have been almost spent by now. Instead, it's just all beginning! How fun.

Enjoy!

Sandra, JoBeth & April - Thanks! When these two orchids rebloomed the first time, I was HOOKED. The first orchid I ever bought came with a tag saying "When I stop blooming just throw me away. There are plenty more where I come from." Needless to say it didn't rebloom. The first is called Brother Golden Potential and has 13 buds. The second is Baldan's Kaleidoscope "Golden Treasure" which only seems to have one spike this year, but it suffered from some sunburn earlier this Spring.

Sandra - Thanks for pointing out the silver lining to the late bloom. You're right. Had they bloomed in February, they probably would be long gone by now.

Beautiful! They're both gorgeous. I can't believe that there was a tag telling you to throw it out when it was done blooming! What's up with that??? They must want to just make money. I'm glad that you didn't do it!

mam, Baldan Orchids grows some of the prettiest Phals I've seen. I have quite a few from them and interestingly, their Phals. often produce basal kiekis.

Bingo. It's all about profit. I posted a pic of this tag, last year. Thankfully, for the growers sake, there are plenty of people who don't care about the plants when flowers are spent.

Note: the tags read for each kind of orchid. Here ya go Patti.......

OMG! I can't believe that either. Seriously, any one that knew better wouldn't do that! You know there have been some of our members that have found plants in the trash, tossed just because they aren't flowering anymore. I bet that's why! lol. That's crazy and sad.

Sandra- Thanks for posting that tag again. That was exactly what the tag said...only on a phal! It wasn't on the two phals in the picture, but on my very first orchid quite a few years ago. Everytime I went to the greenhouse, I would think about buying an orchid. Then when I finally convinced myself to purchase the orchid, I asked for a care sheet, got home, read the tag and was so upset. I remember thinking what a waste. Then the plant did everything but succeed. The blooms died and the plant failed no matter what I tried. Fortunately, the next time I decided to buy an orchid, I bought these two... at another greenhouse just down the road. Interestingly enough, the second has a basal keiki which I need to pot when I repot the plant after this years bloom.

To everyone - thanks for the compliments. I must say these plants thrive despite my newbie failings!

RIP, they are crazy. Then again, my sister tells me the other day she bought an beautiful orchid for her office and she watered it once a week as advised. Then she says it started dying. Now it's all dead. So I say, are you sure? Are the leaves still green at all? I might be able to save it. Her reply is, yup it's dead, all the flowers fell off. Flowers? Upon further questioning I was told the leaves are fine but the orchids are dead! I think I was adopted!!!

Well Solay, I had an identical twin sister who knew and cared nothing for plants. I used to tell her she was adopted.

Sandra, my sister is the total opposite of me. She hates gardening, cooking, cleaning, etc.... She loves shopping, having her nails done, designer purses, etc.... Sheesh...

Sandra, you had a twin? I wish I was a twin. She can do my chores and I can are for the orchids!

I will let you all in on what i was told by an orchid nursery in Melbourne
when they have there yearly sale of there orchids the nursery gets a lot of Chinese people that pay big dollars for the orchids in flower and when the blooms are finished they throw the orchids out.

that is how the nursery makes there money as they keep coming back for more orchids in bloom

I was shocked to hear that. Forget the money what about the poor orchids.

I could not even think of doing that to my beloved chids

a lot of people out there just are not willing to take the time like we do to re bloom an orchid.

with having said that just think what happens when the orchid has bud blast....

I can't understand throwing any plant out...much less an orchid. I am the one that always goes to the clearance plants before going anywhere else....LOL!! I can't stand to see a plant die.
