Epicattleya 'Lollipop' Epicattleya 'Lollipop' {Orchidaceae} #200500016 L:3215 Q:2 The University of Connecticut has it listed on their site. I can't seem to find a photo of it, however. If you contact them, maybe they can fill you in! My nephew just graduated from there! He was on UCONN's swim team. Yay, Huskies!!

Well shame on the University of Connecticut. You'd think a university would know about orchid hybrids and how orchid names work. You'd think.

1) The correct genus is not Epicattleya, (Epidendrum x Cattleya) it is Catyclia (Cattleya x Encyclia). The parents of Catyclia Lollipop are Encyclia tampense and Cattleya loddigesii. While all Encyclias used to be registered as Epidendrum for horticultural purposes, this is no longer the case.

2) The grex, Lollipop should not appear in single quotation marks. Single quotation marks indicate a cultivar name not a grex.

So the proper name of this plant, in spite of what the University of Connecticut indicates, is Catyclia Lollipop.

Encyclia tampensis has green-brown sepals and petals usually with a white lip with a purplish overlay. Cattleya loddigesii is one of the large, flat mauve-ish-pink cattleyas with a white-pink lip. The encyclia is small-flowered while the cattleya is fairly large. So the offspring of this cross will probably be mid-seze to slightly smaller, probably about the size of a cattleyatonia or guaritonia flower and have pinkish petals and sepals possibly with a brown-ish overlay and a white and pink lip.

None of the hyperlink features seem to be available when composing or managing my post so I'll just have to give links ot the parent pics:

Kevin, You rule! I tell ya, UCONN's swim and basketball teams are better than their horticultural division, I promise! Thanks for that knowledge. I was just going on what I found on the site. I was hoping that you would save the day, as you did!!!

Meescha, I would LOVE to see a picture of it when it blooms!

I can't wait to see this orchid bloom either! I have long been a fan of Encyclia and have really liked many of the hybrids made with them. Enc. tampensis has such a cool lip, white with the reddish-purplish spot. I would really hope this feature came through inthe offspring.

Nice find, Kevin.

It's interesting that this plant ever got hung with the Epicat name. The name Encyclia tampensis was published in 1913 by John K. Small (moving the plant from Epidendrum (Lindl., 1847) where it was known as tampense). The cross being discussed here was registered in 1963 by Stewarts. It seems that plenty of time had passed since the Encyclia tampensis name was published to register the cross as Cty, but the records show that the name was once Epicattleya and there is no date to show when it became Catyclia.

Stewarts must have registered the plant incorrectly and a change required later but no mention is made of this change or its date.

I don't know precisely when the RHS adopted Encyclia for registration purposes, but I am fairly sure it was some point within my orchid-life, meaning some point after about 1996 or so. When I started getting involved in showing orchids and judging (which was somewhere around 1999 or so) at which point it was necessary for me ot know proper names, Encyclia were called Encyclia by most everyone but the generic name Epidendrum was still used to register hybrids. When the first mass distributed/cloned Encyclia/Cattleya crosses (Epicat. El Hatillo 'Pinta' for one) became widely available (I noticed them in numbers around the turn of the millenium), the genus Epicattleya was still being used by the RHS meaning they had not yet switched to using Encyclia. It has only been since i moved here to Australia (2004), and even more so only in the last year or so I have seen the intergeneric name Catyclia. So, I think it has been a fairly recent adoption.

Lollipop and other formerly Epicatts like El Hatillo (reg. 1977) were probably correctly registered as Epicattleya back then as tampensis was, at least for hybrid registration purposes, an Epidendrum at that time. Now that the RHS recognizes Encyclia for tampensis, all crosses between it and various cattleyas have been changed retroactively.

It's a mystery to me too. An orchid, of course can't have three parents, so this cross is probably (Den Kay's Choice x speciosum) x speciosum. It would probably be a good idea to ask before purchasing. As you're in New Zealand, you probably know speciosum well. It is native to Australia. Is it native to NZ as well? It's a big plant with somewhat starry flowers. And lots of them too.

I think the Speciosum is an Ausy import ~ The seller did mention in the auction this plant will have a strong inflorence - lots of flowers scented and hardy. sounds very nice. Its very reasonable at $15 I feel.

Is that a pic of it Exasperatus ?
