I am posting for a Newbie

Hi Geeks

I received an email from a person that had a hard time with registering I have set the account up for member "ckcspatti" also with advice needed.

Quote ckcspatti] I have a Moth Orchid (recent purchase), that I selected because it looked healthy and had many buds yet to open. I figured I'd have flowers for months, but as soon as a bud gets close to opening, it starts to look dry and drop, and then die. I spray them will at least once a day. Is there anything I can do to stop this "bud drop"? Thanks

ckcspatti ,
welcome to the club. sound like your plant is suffering from certain shock. Check your
roots. Use a skewer "pock " into the roots and see if the plant is too wet. If it is too wet
then stop watering.

Hi Ckcspatti and welcome to the forum !!!

I would try skipping out on spraying the whole plant and maybe just misting the aerial roots instead. Wait until the blooms open before trying to mist the bud area. Also Phals don't like sudden drafts. Is your plant located in such a place? These are the only things that I have that come to mind. Hopefully other members will have more advice to give.

Nice to have you on board, and as soon as you get the hang of things do post a thread in the Introductions section. We'd love to hear about you and your 'chids.

Hi Ckcspatti! ! Sometimes a new plant just has a really hard time adjusting to a new environment. Did you buy it from the grower, or a retail store? If it was from a retail store, it may have had a lot of stress in traveling. Give it some time to settle in.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I look forward to hearing more about your new orchid and possibly the ones you will get soon. Word is that I am a bad influence for encouraging other to purchase more orchids.

Thumbs up Thanks for the help

Thanks everyone for your help. I have no idea what I'm doing; trying to learn about Orchids and the computer all at the same time. It's an awful lot for an "old dog!" Keep the advise coming please.

It could also be that he bought it from a certain supermarket chain that was selling very good looking orchids but the buds want open I never have problem growing/flowering them but the one I bght because it was''different'' is experiencing the same prob.I suspect those phals were grown under optimum glasshouse conditions and the shock of''normal conditions'' is too much for them.Hang in there she'll be rite next year
cheers Manfred

The culture sheets are just what I've been looking for. Thanks so much. I've bought a couple books, but so far, haven't found what I wanted and needed (the culture sheets!) I think my Toad Lily is OK. I cut back on the amount of spray on the buds and moved the plant out of the grow light I had it in. The buds immediatley stopped shrivling up and dying when I took it out of the light. Are Phal. one of those "low light" orchids? Hopefully, it should tell me that in the "culture sheets". I've only had time to glance at them..Thanks Patti

The picture you posted looks like the Phal. I was having trouble with. Photography and Orchids definitely go hand in hand don't they. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't take pictures of my orchids. One of these days I'll post some. Thanks for your help.
