I'm new at all this, but I think my first orchids were phalaenopsis that came from a retail gardening center. They lasted no problem with just water for the first year and a half. I kept them in an east window and watered them every few days. I'm no expert, but I would recommend an inexpensive one, and then read the info on the forums. I almost killed mine last month, and this site saved them!

Hi Sunnigal

I want to welcome you to the forum

I find that Oncidiums and Oncidium Alliance are good for the beginner. They can handle abuse a bit better than Phals and watering doesn't have to be as stringent.

But first before we get into anything else, how are your grow conditions? Are they going to be indoors, outdoors or both? Is your area low or high lighted? what do your temps average (both high and low)

This information will be a big help in determining what would be good for you. Of course you can grow anything. You just have to accomidate for it.

What would you like?

Welcome to the forum. I wish you best of luck with your new orchid. You can always mail order one if you can't find something you like in your area.
