Talking Cymbidium

I have just purchased a Cymbidium. And don't know a thing about it. It is still blooming. I live in Asheville, N.C. Our winters get cold but summers get in the high 80's. How do I treat my plant after it stops blooming. When can I repot it. It's in an ugly black container. Jean

to the forum.

This is the culture sheet from the AOS website. Read this and see if you are giving the basic needs for your newly adopted 'chid. Then if you have any questions feel free to ask. We're ready to help you BTW, do you have pics? WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE PICS !!!

hi i bought a cym. a few months ago and i repotted it right away. it looked like it was fine at first but it is turning a little yellow around the bottom of the bulb. i didn't know if i was over or underwatering them. i read that as soon as the top starts to get dry, water the plant. so if i could get a little advice it would much abliged.

It could be something, then again, it could be nothing. Cyms like lots of diffused light. Their leaf and bulb color will become a yellowish green in the spring/summer. BUT you live in Florida and humidity is a big no no for the bulbs. It can rot them. Do you have pics of the plant by chance? This would be most helpful. It will be very difficult if not next to impossible to get your Cym to rebloom down in Florida. AOS highly discourages orchid enthusiasts down in the southeast coastal states from owning Cyms as these do not usually survive in these areas.

Hopefully other members can have some other input on this and be more helpful. I wish you the best of luck.

I believe that it gets to freezing temps there, I am sure it will get cold enough to set spikes, but it is very humid also.

Asheville is on the border between old USDA zones 6b and 7a. Figure average annual winter low temperature of 0 to -5 degrees F.

Ashville is in the NC mountains and is heaven on earth in the middle of a hot humid summer. It was and is a favorite summer retreat for the rich and famous. Biltmore House was built by a Vanderbilt and consists of 250 rooms. What a nice summer cottage to escape the heat :>)

Coconut you can repot your plant when it is finished blooming. Follow the culture sheets provided by Jenny. Provide it with lots of morning sun and a bright window in the winter and you should be able to bloom it again.

Brooke
