2 new chids!

I know shame on me for not posting pictures yet. I went to lowes in search of markdown's. They had huge vandas that were very crispy but wouldn't mark them down ;-( So I got two more phals $7 a piece, one is labeled as Magic Kiss and the blooms had been broken off. The other one is Long Pride Snow Crane. I have tried to search online for these to no such luck! Any ways the Long Pride Snow Crane had a lot of good roots and unopened blooms. It was potted in coconut husk that lookd and smelled like it was rotting. SO some of the roots that were good probably a few days ago are now mushy. They have been removed. Where it was steaked was right up against a leaf so that edge all nasty and mushy. SHould I remove the whole leaf r just the bad spot? There are 9 leaves on it. The magic kiss's roots were much better from what I can tell through the pot and digging a bit. tomorrow I will repot and post pictures.

The phals sound interesting,at least the names do! You should post picures, but for meanything mushy-goes-, good luck.

You shouldnt remove the leaf unless the black spot starts spreading. Even if it was spreading, I personally would wait to see if the orchid could contain the infection itself before chopping anything. I wouldnt remove any part of the leaf, even the black part, because if the orchid has the infection contained and you disturb it, it could spread. If the orchid has successfully defeated the pathogen, the spot will dry up, and you should leave the leaf alone..

Congratulations on the new chids! Good luck with them. I agree with made4- Don't start hacking away at anything unless it's spreading. And then don't take much more than the spot itself.

I see you couldn't wait for the stimulus check to get more orchids. You are fitting in just fine.

I agree the names sound very intriguing, I can't wait to see the blooms when they open.

Jay: I got in trouble for buying them by my bf I think it was like $15 bucks for both, but I think I'm going to have to keep a good eye on them, after all they were marked down for good reason.

I had such a great day today and so much to say. And Lots of pictures!!!

I took the sedieria japonica back to Leon at hoosier orchids on Saturday. After taking it out of the pot and checking out the roots he decided it was definitely slug damage. SO he gave me a new one, slug free so here is that picture!

And now the new orchids!!!!! This is the Phal Magic Kiss. It has plenty of leaves and some nice root growth goin on. But some of the roots that looked to be newer had rotted and were mooshy, so I cut them off, they were bad! Also the spot by the steak had began t dry up but the other guy at hoosier orchids said I should go ahead and cut it out.

The inflorescence was broken when I got it so I just took it off so Here is what the flowers look like

and here they are in water

And here is the Long Pride Snow Crane

This one also had some great root growth goin on but some leaves had been removed and there is a spot that I need to watch for rot because of that. There was a spot that was like a little hole. I took it to hoosier orchids with me and they sprayed it with physan for me. It started foaming a lot, I may need to get some physan of my own now!
Here is the whole plant and flowers

I had moved the new ones under the lights temporarily just take some quick pictures then moved them over by the eastern window to quarantine them.

And I took my son to the Conservatory and Sunken Gardens at Garfield Park here in Indy today to take some pictures for my mom and grandma for mothers day presents. My son Rowan, three years old, said "mommy I want that phal-a-lopis in my picture and that one too!" I was gonna throw that picture in too but it is too large to attatch. lol, I'm about a;; pictured out for today!

Those are cute. Your Magic Kiss is a peloric, and a nice one IMO. I really like peloric Phals, in fact I own one lol.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius

Brookn what is peloric? Is that the little sprury taggy things on the petals? OK, I just searched for peloric in the thread and answered my own question. Wow, that is really interesting! Who would've thought? All the more reason for me to justify buying it when my bf tells me I shouldn't have! Which will probably later today!
