Nobile Type Den Care

Hi everyone.I am a new member and live in the northeast of the UK.Your forum is great and just what I need.Over the last two years I have acquired approx 40 named varieties of Nobile Dendrobiums mainly dating back to 1984-6.
In the last growing season I tried hard to achieve the mature canes (ie hard at the tip)and to do this I had to maintain a night temp of 60F until Christmas, when most of the canes had completed. They had Peters Blossom Booster until the end of aug and then 0-10-10 until the canes were completed and no shading on the greenhouse after July.
I then dropped the night temp to 45FAnd stopped watering to initiatethe buds.Sadly only one plant set buds on the recently completeld canes.Other plants are setting buds on the previous years canes.
Is this what should happen (ie the recently completed canes will flower in 2009).
Also is there any way to hurry along the completion of the canes.
Thanks in anticipation.

It depends on the variety as to whether you will get flowers on the new canes or not. Some plants will flower and some won't. Most flower on the previous years growth. The only way that I know of to step up maturity of the canes is with more light, water and fertilizer.

Nobile-type dendrobiums grow adn bloom on a yearly cycle. It takes several months for the canes to grow and mature. Fertilizing them and doing other things might make them bigger and stronger but you can't really speed up their growing cycles.

It is normal for nobile-type dens to not bloom on this year's canes but to bloom on last year's canes. The canes that grew in the spring/summer of and matured in the autumn of 2007 will probably not bloom in the winter of 07-08. They'll probably bloom in the winter of 08-09.
