need help with names

Hi, this is my first post here so I hope I'm not being annoying by making a name my plant post. Today I had the fortune to accidentally run into a plant showcase that had several orchid nurseries. There were many beautiful plants that I wish I could afford. But I ran across these two plants that the seller was trying to get rid of for a 25% discount since it was getting towards the end of the event. I like plants but I'm no herbologist so I don't really know what they are besides that they are orchids. I bought them because they were different from the usual garden store plant. I'm getting them for my mother who loves orchids but could care less about names, so I'm just asking out of curiosity.

The plants don't have any name tags on them and I forgot to ask the seller. So hopefully someone can help me out. Even if it's just the species name would be appreciated.

I apologize for the lack of clarity for the pictures of the orange one.

The first plant looks like a Paphiopedilum spicerianum (I think two blooms on one stem is a little unusual here and may not happen next bloom) and the second is a Reedstem Epidendrum (not sure of a further defined name for this one - maybe someone who grows them will know?).

If you are giving these as a gift to your mother, they will go in two different places.

The first one is a Paph as Mayres has said. Here is a culture sheet for Paphs.

And again as Mayres has said, the second is an Epidendrum which needs a lot more light and care similar to a Cattleya. Here is the Culture sheet for Catts.

Hope this helps.

Really Jay? I just bought my first Epidendrum radicans "reed" orchid and the grower told me to plant it in regular potting soil and give it mid to high light. Now I'm wondering....

I was just going off what I found doing some google searches. I'm sorry about that. I do believe that it will still need more light than that of a Paph.

Thefirst is a Paph and it does contain spicerianum but it is not the species. It's probably a hybrid with spicerianum as one parent.

maybe a Paph. spicerianum crossed with a cochlopetalum paph, due to its shape and multiflorality?

I had a customer in Punta Gorda who told me she no longer liked the reed Epidendrum and when I asked why she said she planted it under an oak tree and could no longer see the flowers. It grew up 20 feet over the top of the oak. So they do like light.

Medium to high light is Cattleya levels and reed Epidendrum are vary tolerant of a wide range of light.

The Paph will live in most areas of the house or in total shade outside. If grown outside be sure to get good air circulation and keep it moist but not wet.

So the Epidendrum should be grown in soil?

Hi Samtr, I have my Epidendrum in fine bark, but I've read that they can go into a well draining potting mix also.
