Hello, I don't grow Vanda,(at least not yet!), but if you do a search you can find all sorts of information, good luck.

desertrose,

Vandas, for the most part, take huge amounts of water (every day) and light. They deal pretty well with full sun, especially if you have a terete type. Others can handle a little more shade but basically these are outdoor plants. Some bloom once a year and some more and flowers last about a month. Do a search here, you'll find everything you could possibly want to know. They don't particularly need to be potted, by the way - hang them up bare-root. And don't underestimate the amount of water they require. They're worth it when they bloom, though.

They're outdoor plants in Florida and other warm humid states and parts of the world like northern Australia but they may not be outdoor plants in other states or parts of the world.

it depend on your area. Your hot and humid climate would be suitable for the plant. You need
to hang it bare root, with shade cloth above it. Use calcium nitrate for rooting (very dilute)
the rest... wait...

Hi, desertrose, I'm from Vero, east coast 50 miles north of Palm Beach. I have two Robert's delights, Pachara Red and #31, a vanda species, a Asoc. Vermillion and a brand new Robert's delight Blue Wax. I'm sorry, I have been trying to upload a picture of my "garden" for you, but, for some reason, it continues to fail.

I spray with Worm Tea about once a week. I will water with a sprinkler several times a week when I water my other plants and vegetables that are around it. I have them on Shepard's hooks in dappled sun starting this time of year, early spring, and full sun in the winter, about October through January. I haven't fertilized with anything other than worm tea.

When I first got them, I was dousing them in a bucket almost every day. During the summer last year, I put them out under a tree and the humidity took care of them completely. They were way too far away for the sprinkler. I found they were extremely happy. I have cared for them like that since. No more bucket dousing, only worm tea and the sprinkler.

My Robert's Delights have been flowering ever since. The blooms last one to two months, sometimes, like right now, there will be two stalks. I always have large, multiple blooms. In fact, right now, my avatar is a picture of one of my Robert's Delights with the recent bloom. They have been on since the beginning of February.

I have no special secrets, just happy vandas. I have them in open baskets, no sphag, just roots that are about one inch around and as crazy looking as curly hair that hasn't been combed. When I got them they all had the long straight strands of roots. Since I don't water them like the nurseries, from the top down, they spiral in their own way toward the humidity they love.

I hope this has helped you. My vandas are my favorite plant since they require next to no extra attention. Good luck!

Desertrose, your pictures in photobucket are very nice. Your vandas look beautiful. The good thing about Florida 85 degree weather is the high humidity. As long as my vandas aren't in full sunlight in the summer, the humidity makes the plant very happy. The roots went from pencil size to a good 1 inch around. I kept them under a Southern Elm last year, a lot of dappled sunlight all day.

This year I will be able to move the hooks around to stay away from the sun. I started out by hanging them on the front porch, but, I just couldn't keep the humidity right. I look forward to seeing more of your pictures as the summer goes on. I will post a pic when my Vermillion blooms. The stalk is about 2 inches now.

Kevin, thank you for the compliment. I am able to walk out my front door and see my vandas. I owe it all to the wonderful OrchidGeeks. I couldn't grow anything before.

Florida vandas outdoors, hehehehehehe whooohoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in florida just north of clearwater, do you folks leave your vandas out all year. It was kind of chilly this am, I wasn't paying any attention to the forcasts. And wigged out when I let the dog out and felt the chill. I hope there isn't any damage.........

Hi, Dan. I bring the vandas in before anything else. If it gets below 58 degrees F, they are in the house. The rest of my orchids can stay out until about 50 F. Do you have any pictures? I would love to see them.

I was talking to a man today who puts all of his phals in trees around his house. He said he has only lost some when it dips below freezing. I'm not that brave.

Sandra, you would probably do better with vandas in Palm Beach than I do. You mentioned you have finally put some plants outside. How are they doing?
