Phalaenopsis

I purchased a Phalaenopsis orchid, a small flowered purple one, whose flowers were only about 2" across. The reason for the purchase was the prolificness of the spikes. I have never seen an orchid with so many spikes originating from just ONE main spike. The main spike has five collateral spikes, all with about 6-8 buds!! I have other Phals, which I have in partially sunny windows, and I give them summers in protected but bright areas outside; I fertilize them about once every month or two, I water when almost dry, and I don't seem to be able to spike more than one spike at a time. Since this new orchid already has all these spikes, will I be able to get it to repeat this performance? Any sure methods to be successful? Are my hopes too high to be able to produce what the professionals have achieved for commercial purposes?

What you have is a Phal with a 'branching habit.' This is in the genetics of the plant and not based on the culture you provide. The difference you can make is the health of the plant and the number of flowers produced. Most Phals will only put up one spike a year, some are continuos bloomers and a few with perfect culture will put up two spikes at a time. Provide the best conditions you can and hope for the best!

Thank you janet a and Phalpal,
The plant was from an Asian grocery store with NO tag!! So, thank you for your information. I really hope that you are right about its "branching habit".... that gives me a greater chance of succeeding with multiple spikes.
