| Anyone heard of a Phal. Hsinying x cygnus? PLEASE! need all the info i can get My mother had an orchid. I love the beauty of orchids, but never owned one...until now. She didn't know how to take care of it so I adopted it today. Already I repotted it(not knowing if this was bad, and wondering if I should put it back where it origionally was) and trimmed off the dead leaves and dead roots.I accidentally pulled off 1/3 leaves that were left on the plant. I really want it to survive and bloom, but need to know the basics to make it thrive. how much water, what type of soil is bedt for this, even what kind of pot to put it in. Everything you can think of to tell me. Also would like a picture of this specific plant if anyone has one. Thanks Last edited by miscocoqt; 02-25-2008 at 08:41 PM. Reason: spelling |

| First - welcome to the forum! Second - It will help everyone if you can go to your profile and enter your location. This helps because we are from all over the world with very different growing conditions. For us to give accurate advice it would help to know what kind of growing conditions you have. Third - It seems as though you have a Phalaenopsis. Follow this link for general care. Last - The name on your tag of your orchid may not be entirely correct. Of course this shouldn't effect your enjoyment of the beautiful flowers. Here is my attempt to decode the name. Phal. Hsinying x cygnus The Phal. means it is a Phalaenopis Your plant is a Phalaenopsis hybrid. The two parents should be listed on either side of the "x" The first plant listed as Hsinying is actually a grower/hybridizer and should be followed by the rest of the plant's name. This should have a second name before the "x" Phal. Cygnus is the other half of this hybrid. I don't know how to find it's parents, but there are many others that can do this. This may be more technical information that you wanted, but it can help if you are trying to find out more specific details about your orchid. Unfortuanately it will be very difficult to impossible to know it's full parentage without the second half of the name of the first parent. There is my shot at the name game, maybe Kmarch can clarify and correct any of my errors. Jay |

| Jay - I think you are on the right track - BOTH sides of the "X" cross list incomplete names of this hybrid - essentially it will be a NOID (No identification possible) unless the specific grower could be contacted that did this cross and could further identify. |

| The web can be horribly confusing and inconsistent regarding orchid culture info, and orchid info in general. I recommend going to reliable, reputable sited for info like the AOS, AOC, and orchid growing forums like this. You can obtain a phal culture sheet on this forum or by visiting the American Orchid Society.
