A Helpful Guide for Newbies

Beginning to grow orchids leads all of us to many searches for answers. Our Orchidgeek forum, AOS culture sheets, a good orchid book and a bit of growing experience usually resolve these beginner jitters.

In addition to the above information available, I found a somewhat condensed culture guide for growing orchids. Hope you enjoy.

Sharyn, good to talk with you again; what a great orchid culture guide. Fred, thanks for making that a sticky. I took a few notes on the orchids I've got but mostly am interested in a few I'm about to get. Has it been a little coolish in your neck of the woods Sharyn? Got down to 42 here last night, thought we might have to break out the longjohns. Heh,heh, heh.

Sharyn, this guide is terrific. I am so glad that you posted it. Thank You. Sometimes I get so ahead of myself and am looking to try this or that for their care and this brings it all back to basics which sometimes (most of the time), is usually the best culture to provide for orchids. And I'm still a newbie, one year later.

Thanks again!

Well I've given this a good read and have some mixed feelings about it. It does summarize quite a bit of useful info that we don't have elsewhere, especially regarding cultural problems, pests, and diseases.

Unfortunately they get some aspects of nomenclature wrong and the section on lighting is needlessly complex and impractical.

I'd give it a B- or a C+.

Kevin: I totally agree with you regarding the lighting & nomenclature sections of this guide. Those of us working on these aspects of orchid culture can find much better and precise information right here on the forum and I believe that your knowledge of the nomenclature is superior to this and many other guides.

For a "newbie" just starting out with the first orchid, I think there's some good basic information in the guide, but certainly not, all inclusive.
