My Hubby is On Board!!!

I can hardly contain myself! My husband just told me to go ahead and order a new orchid!!! I found my orchid book in the "library" last night. I never read in the "library"!
Have any of you ordered from Hausermann? They have a Paph. Maudiae (green and white) that I would like to have. It is in bud which means I wouldn't have to wait years for blooms, (if they survive the ship). Would that be an acceptable choice for a beginner?

I have absolutely no experience with Paphs...but I saw a Paph. Maudiae at Trader Joe's tonight...looked excellent. I'd say go for it if somebody confirms that it is a fine beginner's plant If you are worried about it surviving shipping, you could wait for it to warm up a bit (Hausermann's is in Illinois). I had two shipments of orchids this week, both arrived fine, but the weather was pretty nice.

The weather here is fine, but in IL, I'm not sure. I guess the nursery will take that into consideration when they ship. Does anyone know how long the blooms last on most Paphs? That's a dumb question, of course you guys do.

The paph you are looking at will work, just keep in mind it likes low light like a phal. Keep it in fine mix or sphag. and dont let dry out .
My blooms seem to last 2 to 3 months. the biggest problem I have with them is they have such a small root system. This paph has been in flower since early Nov.

Excellent choice. They are VERY easy to grow. Too bad you don't have a Trader Joes nearby. I have purchased several excellent maudiae types (WITH name tags!) there for only $7.99! They seem to rebloom each year without any problems too. The foliage is excellent to view during the non-blooming months as well.

Two is always better than one! When both of you start to add to your collection I don't know where it will lead you to

mayres: $7.99 for a Paph.!!??. First Trader joe store has been opened in Canada just two weeks ago in Brampton, Ontario. It is about 60km from my place. May be I will visit them this weekend

Lyle, you just confirmed my choice. I love that orchid!

Mayres, I wish I had a Trader Joe's, too. I've never heard of them until I joined this forum. The Maudiae at Hausermanns is $25 plus shipping. I could buy smaller plants for less money, but then I would have to wait on blooms indefinately. I WANT THEM NOW!!!!!

wait wait , that does not mean he pay for it though. Our spouse most of the them dont
see eye to eye to this hobby. He said buy does not mean he is also crazy about the plant.

I have the Ortho book "Complete Guide to Orchids" and it has many very pretty ones there. If I keep going we'll have to knock out the south wall in my dining room for a larger window.

Well, that's not as crazy as it sounds...If we ever come into a large sum of money, my DH has often said that we would attach a sun room or GH to the south end of the house. That means we would need to knock out the wall...so?

BTW, I have ordered from Hausermann's before and am waiting for a shipment now. Their packaging is great even in colder weather, and the disclaimer at the beginning of the ordering process says that they will hold up your order if weather is severe. But surely you have growers closer to you?? Anyway, their prices are a little high, but I do love to look at their on-line catalogue.

You're starting out great Happy growing...

pikevi - yep! Take my word on it - $7.99. I have seen them have a couple dozen plants at a time on several occasions. It depends what time of year - they of course carry them when they are in bud/blooming - only certain times of the year. I'd call before making a trip! There are quite a few in our local all-in-one stores now for $14.95. Same exact quality of plant - probably all from Matsui (?) in California - only for twice the price you get a $2 ceramic outer pot. The Trader Joes version comes with a terra cotta outer pot. Amazing what they think people value.

You know, I haven't quite figured it out yet, but he's actually encouraging my orchid obsession. He wants to go with me to the orchid show they're having in Memphis this May. Go figure! I think I'm going to enjoy this!

When husband & wife combine, what you get?

DOUBLE THE TROUBLE. DOUBLE THE ADDICTION.

And next time when he says, go ahead - purchase the orchid, did not say how many & you are holding the card.

Ahemm go ahead spent, spent spent.....
