The cheapest & most expensive orchid was S$4 & S$12 respectively. They were on sale.

rmt135,

The problem with identifying tagless orchids is that unless they are certainly a species, or unless they are a popular, well-known, distinctive hybrid, an ID will pretty much be impossible. Hybrids demonstrate a great deal of variation, the more complex they hybrid, the greater the variation. So you could have orchids of 2 different parentages looking exactly the same or very similar.

So beyond saying "Cattleya" or "Vanda" more specific IDs won't be possible with one exception: the white and green flower found at: http://www.orchidgeeks.com/gallery/d...p?imageid=2053. This flower could be the species Brassavola nodosa. Unfortunately it could also be the hybrid Brassavola Little Stars (nodosa x cordata). A picture isn't enough to sort it out. You'd probably have to get it looked at by a taxonomist.

I'm concerned by something I see in 2 of your cattleyas:
http://www.orchidgeeks.com/gallery/d...p?imageid=2041
http://www.orchidgeeks.com/gallery/d...p?imageid=2043
I see irregular colour breaks in the petals and sepals. In the first one you'll see it in the middle of the dorsal sepal and in the middle of the left lateral sepal (but not in the right). In the second one you'll see it in the dorsal sepal and the left petal of the flower on the left and in both petals and the right lateral sepeal of the flower on the right. These colour breaks are symptoms of virus. I strongly recommend getting rid of these plants as they will not be healthy plants, they will probably always bloom with these colour breaks and they can potentially infect the rest of your collection. Orchid viruses can not be treated or cured. The only remedy is to destroy the plants. I'm sorry to have to give you this bad news because they are pretty flowers.

http://www.orchidgeeks.com/gallery/d...p?imageid=2053

Brassvola hybrid if not it is Brassavola nodosa.

It is still in stock. I hope. (This nursery is different from sick orchid nursery).

Kmarch,

I am going back to the nursery where I got the sick orchids. I want to hear from the owner what he got to say about them.

kmarch could have mistaken the rain damage. Normally i would worry that it would be a
virus. But a lot of the orchids is affected by the rain. This could affect the chinese new year
harvest as the flower tend to have fungus attack . My Dendrobium in the the farm
bloom normally without the rain. With the Rain the flower look exactly like what you
have. So dont worry about it.
Yes get me the Brassavola nodosa, and the Brassia, I love the JB price of it. Thanks in
advance.

Kmarch,

Is there any other symptoms or signs other than the discoloration of the petals & sepals that can lead us to know it is a virus attack?

Will the leaves show any sign?

Thanks

Unfortunately there is no truly reliable method to help in identifying a virused
orchid plant by simply looking at it without it being laboratory tested. There
are certain symptoms that can lead to suspect one though. Yellowish ring
and rectangular spots can sometimes be characteristic. Necrotic spots together
with chlorosis (lack of chlorophyl) can also be a sign. Usually these spots are
see through on the leaf versus just on one side.

I can help some on the unique vandaceous you have 2052

It is such a unique flower and leaf pattern that I have never seen another even close. It also grows better for me in a pot rather than a basket.

I am working backward and while I am not positive on 2048 it has a couple of unique characteristics.

It is clearly an Encyclia Cattleya hybrid. You photo does not show it but the bulbs on an Encyclia are round like an onion and a cross with a Cattleya makes it look stretched.

I an fairly confident that it is

because of the almost exact match in color and shape, and more so since it is a high straight spike towering over the plant. My plants are about 12-18 inches and the flowers another 12-18 over the top

I went through the rest and could not find anything else unique enough to venture an ID.

At least the are pretty. Enjoy them.

Dear Jerry,

I love your Rhv. Herbert Kurihara ‘Kazuto Nitta’. Simply mamamia. Beautiful.

You are right. The Encyclia Cattleya hybrid as you mentioned has a high straight spike. Well above the plant. I will get you a photo of the leaves & bulbs for you.

I love the way you captured the orchids & I wished I know more about photography. I am nuts in photography & I only own a camera in the last few months.

Thanks Jerry for sharing the info & the beautiful flowers.
