Unhappy Broken Orchid!

My cats knocked over and broke off my Ludisia Discolor (a jewel orchid)! I read that it is propagated by breaking the rhizome. Does that mean that I can save this orchid? I'd had it for almost 2 years and it was doing so well (no flowers yet, but beautiful leaves).

Any help as to what I can do would be greatly appreciated!!

Bec

I just wanted to add that the growing part of the plant was completely severed from the root part, at the base of the plant. I suppose the plant could regrow from the root? But I'd love to save the rest of the plant, if possible.

I have read that they are very easy to root, in moist soil or a glass of water, altho this is winter so it might be a bit more difficult.

The "D" of "discolor" should not be capitalized because this orchid is a species orchid. Species names (the second ot the two) is not capitalized. Check out the thread on orchid names and nomenclature for more info.

Sorry, I actually knew the D of discolor wasn't supposed to be capitalized. Just a finger slip or something.

Thanks for the advice evangentry! I really hope I can save it!

I had no problem rooting a Ludisia discolor in a glass of water, just as I would root a coleus. It took a few weeks and then was easily potted in a coir mix. It is happy at a good friend's house. -- Bill

I am surprised that you have not flowered the discolor. I have about 50 left from this years crop and all are in flower already at about 1 year old. Usually they flower a little later April to June but it has been very hot this year.
