Orchid name

Can you tell me something about my new orchid? Here Easy Orchids :: Odontoglossum :: Burrageara Nelly Isler - UK Orchid Growing and Orchid Sales I found information that it is Odontoglossum, but how could I treat my new orchid?

hello sanja! welcome to orchidgeeks! may your addiction prove long and flowery

best place to get information for starting on your new orchid is at the American Orchid Society http://www.aos.org/aos/orchids/docum...ermedodont.pdf this sheet is particular to Odontoglossums. I haven't any of those myself, so cannot offer much in advice for them, sorry, but yours looks very healthy and pretty in general!

best of luck!

Thank you, Robb and Tobi!
I am a little bit concerned because I read that my new orchid is mix of
Oncidium, Miltoniopsis and Vuylstekeara. One Miltoniopsis already died in my house because of very high temperatures this summer.

Miltonias (Miltoniopsis) prefer cooler conditions than other oncidiums which may be why it didn't do well in your conditions (if they proved to be too warm). This plant, while it contains Miltoniopsis, also contains other, warmer growing Oncidium alliance plants. If you follow the sulture sheets recommended you'll probably be ok.

Thanx Kmarch, I hope my orchid will be ok. Although, I read here Orchid of the Week Library: Burrageara Nelly Isler 'Swiss Beauty' that temperatures should be 68 to 85, but in Croatia in summer temperatures are often more than 85 degrees!

You have an interesting croos there; very pretty. I had no idea Miltonia was in the Oncidium alliance. As they say....learn something new every day!

These types are thirsty drinkers. Don't let the roots completely dry out before the next watering. Trick is watering. Overwater and you can ruin the medium, ie mold/mildew and or rotten roots. Underwater and your plant can get the "accordian" effect on the leaves. I usually water my once a week with a daily misting in the mornings. My mix is a bark/spagh mix, more spagh cause of my conditions.

Thank you very much! It is very important to me, because I have 8 Phalaenopsis and 5 Dendrobiums and I water them when bark is completly dry. In Croatia is winter now, is it too much to water once a week? Daily temperatures in home are 68 degrees, and by night 64 degrees, but because of nearness window I belive it is possible that night temparature is few degrees lower. Outdoor temperature is about 27 degrees.

Sanja,
Your home temps are very similar to mine now and We are in winter also. Your Phals
probably could be watered once a week providing they are in a bark mixture. They need
to almost dry out before watering but not completely. As for the Dends. (If they are
Phalaenopsis type Dendrobiums), you could probably get away with watering every 10-12
days. If any are in moss, then it would be a longer time between waterings. You can also
use a skewer method to determine when to water.

I water Phals and Dens every 14 days because it is very high humidity here, athwart heating in home. I watered Phals 14 days ago and I can still see condensate water on inside border of a pot.

Watering frequency depends on many different factors like temperature, humidity, what season it is, and what kind of potting medium the orchid is potted in. One person might water their Phals once a week while someone else waters theirs once every 2 weeks.

It is much more useful to get good culture sheets, like those found here or at American Orchid Society, which will say things like "keep evenly moist" (for Phals) or "allow to dry between waterings" (Cattleyas) then just watch your plants and water when necessary.

It is important that you water (or not water) based on the orchid's cultural requirements and your observations of your orchid rather than someone telling you to water once or twice a week.

In other words, watering frequency is relative but a particular orchid's cultural requirements are not.

Just a note to other forum members: It is important to keep this in mind because while we may water our Phal every 2 weeks or so, doing so in different conditions, in different potting mix in a different part of the worlks (where it may be summer instead of winter) etc., etc. could result in the loss of an orchid. It's best not to confuse the orchid's cultural requirements with your particular method of delivering those needs.

I agree with Kmarch. That's why I said what I said in the above. Sorry I didn't clarify. I have very dry conditions in my apartment with the temperature hovering around 72 degrees. Because of my conditions in my house I have to water every 4-7 depending on what plant it is. This also factors the medium I use. I was watering almost every three days until I changed media. I felt like I was dousing a fire!

Knowing the conditions of your enviroment and adjusting accordingly really helps.....Now for my silly Catt that's giving me a hard time

I agree with you! I asked in that way because I have lot of experience with Phals and Dens, but now I bought completely different orchid and I wanted to compare.

Sanja has anyone directed you to the 'Skewer Method' sticky?? The link is below incase this is new to you. I love this method and still like to use it when I try a new medium or move my plants, even from season to season when conditions change.
One little tip I learned when using the skewers, I twist while inserting it into the soil. That way the pointed skewer will bounce off of a root instead of piercing it.
